Summer Leaders

Outstanding Summer Leaders

Our summer staff and leadership teams are the special ingredient in creating an unforgettable experience for each & every participant on our programs. We take great pride in the praise our leaders earn year after year for their ability to create fun, safe, and inclusive group environments. They are teachers, professors, coaches, student affairs professionals and other leaders who believe in the transformative impacts of travel. And best of all, they love what they do, which is evident from the fact that many return year after year for 5, 10, even 20+ summers!

What Sets Our Leaders Apart?

Competitive Staff Selection & Hiring Process

Every staff member on our programs is certified in CPR and First AID, and must complete our rigorous screening of personal interviews, reference checks, and criminal background checks. Last year, only 18% of applicants earned the coveted position of leader or director.

We pride ourselves on finding the most unique individuals who:

  • Have a demonstrated passion for educating and working with teens
  • Serve as positive role models in their community
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills
  • Love to have fun and know how to get everyone involved
  • Are responsible, social, empathetic, and caring

Thorough Training and Preparation

After being selected as a summer leader, director, or other summer staff member, we require all staff to attend mandatory in-person training sessions. Written manuals with detailed policies and procedures are reviewed, and additional role-playing exercises reinforce our safety protocols. This ensures that all staff are well-versed in our philosophy, policies, and procedures, and are ready to provide a well-supervised and fun-filled summer program.

24/7 Support During the Summer

Your staff team, which includes a Program Director and multiple Program Leaders, is also supported by, and has regular contact with, our Company Directors, Communication Center Monitors, and Regional Supervisors. This group of people acts as their 24/7 support team, available throughout the entire program. In a given summer, we have over 280 scheduled support visits to make sure programs are running smoothly. This in-depth investment in personnel is essential to achieving consistent, excellent program quality.

Meet a Few of Our Program Directors

Program Directors have the highest level of responsibility with their group in the summer. They oversee everything including, but not limited to, the health, safety, and enjoyment of each and every participant, and the execution of the itinerary as planned and outlined by WCC. Program Directors are responsible for managing their team of Program Leaders through coaching, supervising, and providing ongoing feedback, striving to have the best leaders possible for their group of participants. Program Directors have extensive experience working with teenagers in the non-summer months and participate in additional WCC training to best prepare them to run the program.

Meet a Few of Our Program Leaders

Our Program Leaders serve as the backbone of our programs (known as Resident Advisors on our Pre-College Enrichment programs). Their primary responsibility includes monitoring the safety (physical and social), well-being and enjoyment of all participants. This includes but is not limited to: daily wake-ups and room checks, leading activities and programs, getting to know all participants, and managing situations as they arise. Working with the Program Director, the Program Leader’s goal is to provide a positive group experience helping each teen experience the summer of a lifetime!

Meet a Few of Our Summer Company Directors

Our Company Directors are the direct contact and 24/7 support system in place for our Program Directors on the road. They themselves have been Program Directors for many years and are the experts available to support individual staff teams working through high-level situations. Their invaluable experience is especially impactful during their supervisor visits to programs throughout the summer. Our Summer Company Director team is made up of management-level members from our full time team as well as seasonal managers who join the team each summer.

More Key Players on our Summer Team

Communication Center Monitors

Our Communication Center Monitors serve as the critical link between parents and staff on the road, as well as assist behind the scenes with logistical support and problem solving. They are the frontline of administrative operations while programs are in progress and are available 24/7. They speak to the Program Director daily to stay up to date on everything happening on the program to best support families as needed.

Regional Supervisors

Our seasoned Regional Supervisors visit and spend extended time with programs, acting as an extra set of hands to assist as needed as well as a sounding board to discuss the many components of the program they are visiting. These individuals are previous Program Directors with invaluable experience and knowledge to support staff and participants. Their visits allow for a check-and-balance and consistency throughout the many programs around the world. These Supervisors are positioned in various cities around the world, giving us the opportunity to provide high level in person support at any time needed.
