Dear Families,

We’ve certainly been busy the past few days. We are now at a wonderful hotel for our Habitat for Humanity project and feeling incredible with our work. But our previous days were filled with glorious adventures. Here’s a snippit of our journeys:

Day 10:
Our first full day in Tamarindo began with a fun half day of service. We were working on a beautification project of a local primary school. We arrived at the school and got straight to work with repainting the interior of the classroom a bright teal and calming blue. Everyone was extremely organized and we taped off the roof, windows and doors; split into groups doing details or using rollers; and kept the floor relatively paint free. With high spirits and hilarious conversations we got through the day quickly. When we were done the class looked like new and we all celebrated over some watermelon and turpentine (to clean our hands!!). Everyone enjoyed lunch following our active morning and we were even lucky enough to spot some monkeys crawling on wires and jumping into trees across the street form our restaurant. Next, we drove a short 5 minutes from our hotel to the beautiful Playa Pinca, to spend the day enjoying the sun and surf. Marco and Bailey managed to stay in the water for the full 2 hours we were there, playing in the crashing waves and swimming with the sting rays. The rest balanced their swimming with some time relaxing under the beautiful Costa Rican sun and taking in the breathtaking, tropical view. We enjoyed dinner at the trendy Voodoo Lounge in Tamarindo and then ventured down to Aqua Discotheque to dance the night away. Needless to say, those who didn’t fall asleep on the bus on the way to the hotel certainly passed out as soon as their heads hit the pillow.

Day 11:
What an awesome day- we began with a little Bollywood bus ride (we watched Slumdog Millionaire on the bus!) and arrived at our resort in Rincon de la Vieja by lunch time. Rincon is everyone’s favorite place to say in Spanish – it’s so fun to roll the ‘r’- give it a try! Our adventure in Rincon began with some horseback riding to a lovely waterfall. Everyone had a lot of fun naming their horses and we had everything from Classy (Val’s competitive horse), to Tina and Bailey’s multicoloured ‘Hidalgo.’ Lucy (Dani’s horse who was actually a boy) was a sweetie who liked to stay at the back of the pack and Jordan’s ‘Sylvia’ liked to be at the front. Marco’s ‘Robinson’ was actually a girl? and Jemima’s Gertrude and Chelsea R.’s Patricia were big sweeties. It was lots of fun all around. We rode to a beautiful waterfall where we got to frolic in the pools. Marco and Chelsea R. were super strong and were able to actually swim up to one of the smaller waterfalls. The current pushed most of the rest of us away! After that, we took a bus to the volcanic mud baths at a spa called ‘Symbiosis.’ We watched a guide take the mud right out of the natural source and it was warm when it was brought to us in tubs. We had a blast using paint brushes and our hands to cover each other in mud. We had a rousing game of Ninja while we waited for the mud to dry. After washing off in the cold water, the hot tubs at the spa were a perfect end to the experience. The food at our ‘home’ here was AMAZING! Jordan said it was the best of the trip. A make your own pasta bar was a huge hit. So was the flan for dessert. After dinner, everyone finally understood why the trip leaders had taken a survey of everyone’s favorite sodas, chocolate bars and sports! We had a rousing game of ‘Family Feud’ and Rebecca’s ‘Gretas’ won by a landslide over Gabby’s ‘Wildersqueaks.’ Remi made a key save for the Greta’s- coming in at the last minute to take the last category for her team. After the game, everyone got a little mellow as we wrote postcards to each other that are being sent as we speak, and will arrive once the trip members are back in their hometowns. The postcard’s arrival will be a reminder of the amazing friends we have made here in Costa Rica. The bonds between the trip members are truly remarkable and the group really feels like one big family.

Day 12:
Today began with wonderful ‘make your own’ omelettes and then an amazing River Tubing adventure.  Chelsea H. and the leader Bretton were the only ones to jump out (they loved it!) and Marco and the leaders Jessie and Bretton had a pretty intense race for first place which included banking each other on rocks! All in good fun. Ali had everyone laughing on the bus ride there and back with her singing and jokes. Everyone wanted to go again right after we finished! They will just have to wait for whitewater rafting at the end of the trip! After lunch, where Val and Bailey had everyone laughing with quotable ‘Friends’ episode moments, everyone enjoyed some time to relax and catch up on their reading in the hammocks outside the rooms in the afternoon. A much deserved rest after our adventuring!!

As we said, we are now at an awesome hotel in San Carlos for our Habitat project and will write all about that before we head back to the Central Valley of Costa Rica.

Sincerely,
Bretton and Jessie

Bienvenue from Switzerland!

Since we talked to you last, the European Discoverers have consumed over 247 nutella-filled crepes, biked the border of the pristine Lake Annecy, and went whitewater rafting in the crystal-clear French Alps.

We arrived in Annecy just in time for dinner and to explore the elegant old city on our way to the restaurant. Trip members were completely enthralled by the authentic cobblestone streets surrounded by small, picturesque canals lined with brightly-colored flower baskets. Liza, Abby and Jen couldn’t help but stop to snap pictures, taking in all of the city’s immense beauty with extreme awe. At the restaurant, trip members were psyched to learn that they’d be cooking their own dinner fondue style, a tradition amongst locals in Annecy. Stephanie and Raffy were naturals, cooking with total expertise while Whitney and Jillian loved every bite, exclaiming that it was one of the best meals they’d eaten yet. After dinner, we walked over to a large park overlooking the breathtaking mountaintops and shimmering blue waters for a group activity where trip members were asked to come up with a jingle and commercial. Kim, Jacob W, Melanie, Haley F., Stephanie, Michael, Sam F and Lauren B. were the stars of the evening, impressing us all with their extreme talent and creativity.

The next afternoon, we relaxed a bit on the beach. Finally able to envelope ourselves in the crisp blue waters we’d been longing for, Lindsey, Dani, Anthony and Alexis jumped right in, feeling immediately refreshed. Meanwhile, Emily B and Allie chose to enter the water in style, splashing down the water slide with delight. The following day, we rose with the sun to set off for Centron, a river-valley between majestic French Alps to challenge ourselves on class three and four rapids. Rafting was especially thrilling for Ilana and Jesse W. who had never been before, and Dylan, Zach and Jesse B., who loved getting maximum air-time with each wave their raft overtook. After all of our hard work on the rapids, we treated ourselves to deux boules (two scoops) of mouthwatering gelato. Speaking of mouthwatering, we are now in Zermatt, Switzerland where trip members have fallen madly in love with Swiss chocolate. Suffice it to say that the cute little chocolate shops that line the streets of Zermatt may have sold more truffles in the last two days than they have all year. Once the fresh Swiss air lulled us to sleep, we awoke to experience the illustrious Matterhorn. Sam W. and Stephen were fascinated by the seemingly flawless land that floated beneath their gondola and couldn’t wait to get their hands on some fluffy white snow at the top. Gondolas in Switzerland today, gondolas in Venice tomorrow.

Talk to you soon!

Each day seems to keep getting better!!! We can’t believe we forgot to mention the incredible time we had white water rafting on the Snake River in Wyoming prior to arriving at our campsite in Utah. The boat that contained mostly girls ran incredibly smoothly and it seemed as if they were all experienced rafters. Jessie put her strong paddling skills on display and motivated the rest of the girls on the raft to paddle hard in order to overcome the rapids. The following day we went to a water park and an amusement park where we had a blast and explored different roller coasters.

After our time in Utah, we hit the open road and headed for Winnemucca, Nevada where we all did our laundry together. Jon learned the ropes extremely quickly and before you could blink an eye, he was helping everyone with their laundry. Before we knew it, it was time to hit the road again and head towards beautiful Lake Tahoe, which borders Nevada and California.

Our first stop was at the ropes course where Julia courageously and confidently conquered the rope and wood panel bridge at a rapid pace. Becca T was also one of the ropes course all-stars, as she impressed everyone with her climbing skills on the climbing tree. After a fun afternoon testing our balance, we arrived at our campsite in Lake Tahoe where we played games and relaxed in preparation for what the following day had in store.

In the morning we headed to the beach at Lake Tahoe (on the California side) where the group had their choice to either water ski, wakeboard, or go tubing. It was Drew’s first time ever going water skiing, and he was able to get up on his first try and stay up for quite a while! Undoubtedly, that is something very challenging for a first-time water skier and he is definitely a natural – good job! Later that afternoon, the group had the opportunity to go on a giant sailboat on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe where we relaxed and soaked up the sun after an adventurous and action-packed day.

At night we had a talent show where Josh S wowed the crowd by singing the night away. The group unanimously agreed that his most popular hit was Bohemian Rhapsody. Also, Sydney O, Julia, and Jessie performed a song that they wrote about the staff which was comical and very creative. The next day, we made our way to San Francisco.  Our first stop after checking into our hotel was AT&T Park to see the San Francisco Giants take on the New York Mets. It was particularly interesting considering we had Mets fans on our trip such as Josh G who was decked out in Mets attire to cheer on his home team.

The following day we went to Alcatraz where the group had the opportunity to learn about and tour the former maximum-security prison. Later that night, on the bus back from dinner in China Town, the trip member of the day awards were handed out to Reid and Josh K. Other award winners who preceded these two includes Josh G, Brooke, and Ryan K. We have one more night in San Francisco before we head south to Ventura, California where we will be camping. You will be hearing from us soon!!

Dear family and friends of Community Service Africa,

First up upon arrival in Johannesburg (after we stretched our legs and had a delicious lunch) was a trip to soccer city and the apartheid museum. Seeing a world cup stadium site was amazing! We were able to see the players’ change rooms and the VIP suite, we got to sit in the stands and we were even lucky enough to step out onto the pitch where the championship game was played – shhhhhhh….don’t tell the manager.

Next we were off to the Apartheid Museum where we all had the opportunity to learn about Nelson Mandela’s journey and role in ending apartheid. The museum offered us a look into important historical events in South Africa which gave us insight into the culture as we begin our travels.

The next morning, we were off to the  Kruger area! After a fun filled game of pictionary telephone, Sam and Danielle told us some perplexing riddles.  Melissa and Kate kept an eye out for African wildlife but it wasn’t until we arrived at our Lodge that we spotted animals and were even greeted by warthogs and impala!  That night, along with Babysitter (the momma warthog at the lodge) we enjoyed a campfire and played games in the thatched-roof dining area. We kept our eyes out for the leopard that supposedly likes to visit our Lodge and fell asleep listening to cheetahs howling as well as the many other sounds of the African bush.

Yesterday, we had a day of high ropes and white water rafting. New heroes emerged in the group after the high ropes activity–Meaghan and Sam, who dared to go first; Alex, who navigated the suspended cable with impressive speed; and Jess, who overcame her fear of heights and made it to the very end.

After a delicious lasagna lunch, we grabbed the river rafts and headed out onto to the Sabie River with our guides Oscar and 54.  The afternoon was beautiful and we enjoyed the water and the sun as we conquered rapids.  Kate, Jenny, Jess and Gabe were the first to head down the river, Ally and Remi were mysteriously always traveling backwards and sideways (anyway but straight). Splash wars ensued, iguanas were seen–all in all a great day!

Until the next update, Afri-later!

Dear Families,

As we headed to Annecy from Paris, the Justin Bieber-trend continued with a sing-a-long version on the bus dedicated to our Trip Director Bryan. Dinner in Annecy brought some new experiences for some of our trip members, as Colton was thrilled about shelling shrimp for the first time! The staff were quite impressed with the group as we split them into teams for an organic alphabet scavenger hunt; they had to find all the letters of the alphabet hidden on buildings, on the street, or in the natural environment. Mayra, Evan, Eliza, Megan, and Mimi were our winners!

The second day in Annecy brought many adventures as we went for a bike ride along the lake in the morning and then went whitewater rafting in the afternoon. Lauren and Annesse were both first-time rafters but loved the thrill of the experience, along with Mayra, who had quite an adventurous time in her boat. We finished the evening with our first taste of gelato before the famous gelato in Italy that we will hit up in several days!

As we all saw the shop signs “Herzlich Wilkommen”, we felt graciously welcomed in the picturesque village of Zermatt where we added German to our language options of the trip. Our first evening in Zermatt created new memories at a country restaurant that actually played pop music. Lindsay and Miranda had the chance to learn to play pool for the first time; and while David bragged of his mad pool skills, he ended in a tough battle with Bryan. Chloe and Dani M., on the other hand, got a little more creative with their billiards game, as they racked the balls into a heart-shape.

The beauty of Zermatt was readily evident the next day as we took the gondola up to the picturesque top of the famous Matterhorn mountain.  After exploring the village, well known for both chocolate and Swiss Army knives, we concluded our evening with quite the party at a local club in Zermatt. Hayley rocked out in her heels for a night out on the town and loved dancing with Valerie and the rest of our group, while Ben showed up the locals with his dance moves on the dance floor.

During our last wake-up in Zermatt as we made our way to Venice, Evan offered up of one of his favorite quotes: “Let’s do it like Brutus!”
