Last night, the contestants on the Amazing Race traveled from Indonesia to Thailand. Talk about perfect timing as we will be off to Thailand this summer.

Our new Thailand Community Service program is one of 5 new Community Service itineraries along with Boston Community Service, Washington, DC Community Service, East Coast Community Service & Fiji Community Service.

But back to the Amazing Race … The teams started off in Southern Thailand in Phuket with a coral reconstruction project, one similar to a project we will be doing in Fiji. Our program will be spending 5 nights in Krabi, a town 2 hours away from Phuket. In Krabi, our service will consist of assisting with mangrove plantation and clean up.

The next stop on the show was a rock climbing challenge and final stop at Koh Phanyi (the floating stadium) in the Phang Nga province. Our groups will be kayaking thru the stunning islands in Phangna Bay, snorkeling & SCUBA diving in Koh Ph Phi, snorkeling in Chicken Island and enjoying the beaches in Railay Bay.

Oh lay, oh lay, oh lay, oh lay … feelin’ hot hot hot!

After much anticipation, the cruise was finally here! We woke up and drove straight to the boat with Caribbean music and line dances blaring in the background! We boarded the ship wearing the psychedelic tie-dye shirts that we made in Lake Tahoe… our group in brightly colored shirts singing and dancing was surly a sight to see. All of our excitement worked up our appetites and we headed straight to the Jimmy/Warren (buffet that is) in the Paris Restaurant to devour a full blown feast. After lunch, it was time to explore the beautiful ship. Some of us headed to the pool area, some of us scoped out the teen club, and others chose to relax in the lounges. After a brief muster drill (not mustard like we kept calling it), we showed off our moves at the sail away party. Although we couldn’t convince the DJ to play Party Rock Anthem, Jacob showed off our flashmob choreography to a different song. Eden, Emily B., and Jeremy also boogied down in the front of the Conga line.

Dinner in the Destiny Restaurant was a blast. During the middle of the meal, the waiters started breaking it down to the song Low by Flo Rida. The dining room turned into one huge dance party… napkins being swung in the air, forks and spoons being used as the instruments of choice. Ariel and Ronni jumped up with the waitstaff. Ronni didn’t hesitate to teach them some new moves either! After dinner, we went to the Welcome Aboard show in the theatre and saw the ship’s singers, dancers and stand-up comedians perform.

The next day started with a ferry over to Catalina Island! On the tender to the island, we sang our morning mix and got the entire boat to wish Courtney a happy birthday. After about 8 minutes, the captain politely requested that we don’t quit our day jobs!

We spent the morning browsing the shops and restaurants that lined the street. The best purchase may have been the birthday hat Jason bought Courtney. That afternoon we went kayaking and snorkeling. The snorkelers launched from Lover’s Cove. In the water, they saw a plethora of fish. The kayakers launched from the marina and joined the snorkelers at Lover’s Cove. Although everyone thought it would be a peaceful ride, Rachael and Sam H. were the victims of Jared’s splash war! When we got back on the boat, we took advantage of the ship’s amenities – swimming, gym facilities, and more. Matt L., Ethan, and Danielle took the time to use the gym and had  phenomenal workouts!

That evening was formal night. We took some group pictures and rushed into the dining room with one thing on our mind… LOBSTERS! Grant and Noah exclaimed that they had the best lobster of their lives (and requested that exact sentence go into the scribe!), and Emily K. shared that seeing her friends in fancy clothes was the highlight of her day. We sang Happy Birthday to Courtney just before our servers sang and danced to Hot Hot Hot!! The theme of tonight’s show was country rock, with Sarah singing along to most of the hits.

Hola from Mexico! It was incredible that we were in Mexico, our 3rd country since the start of our adventure! We spent the morning exploring Ensenada. Allie and Joli bought handmade bracelets from local vendors. Courtney and Emily K. also bought bracelets to add to their collection (they have one from every city AmVoy #2 has visited thus far!). Sam R. and Jordan tried on gigantic sombreros and even took pictures of themselves wearing them in Mexican cardboard cut-outs. Instead of trying on sombreros, Jeff picked out a wacky Spider Man mask (who knew what we’d find in Ensenada!) Erika and Ariel got their hair braided. Some of us also practiced our Spanish. Paco (Andrew) and Esteban (Steven) tried to converse with the locals. When we asked Matt M. to join in on the fun, he replied in Chinese!

That evening we partied under the stars. The Caribbean band got our whole group jiving. Once again, Hot, Hot, Hot and the Dollar Dance were big hits. Emily K. and Aja even put their reputations on the line and learned the Wobble. Sam D. joined in on the fun, participating in the ship-wide hula hoop contest. Being the group of dancers we are, we kept the party going as we said Adios to Mexico and got ready for our fun day at sea.

Our day at sea began with a sleep-in which was welcome by all. Breakfast could not have been sweeter! Parked just off the Mexican coastline, it was an opportune time to take in the hot Mexican sun (just ask Lexi) while sitting by the pool. The sombreros that we tried on in Ensenada would have been handy! Aja escaped the heat by riding the water slide for the first time and boy did she enjoy it, in fact, she rode it more than once, each time hoping for a bigger thrill! Ethan meanwhile, went to the gym to work out while a few trip members opted for a different, more exclusive sort of fun: exotic drinks! Jamie walked around the boat in search of the perfect strawberry smoothie, which she found with Gabi (who was able to drink hers out of a fishbowl cup). At the end of the afternoon, Eden and Danielle gave Erika an early birthday present: a bracelet. It was such a thoughtful gesture and I am sure this will be a birthday that Erika will never forget!

The evening farewell show was superbly done, with singers and dancers performing hit songs and dances while wearing funky, dated costumes. Aja and Sam H. thought it appropriate to perform the “front-crawl” when Surfing USA came on (something that they wouldn’t ever be caught doing to any “modern” music!).

We are now back on the mainland look forward to San Diego! Cannot wait for the zoo and surfing.

Hello Family and Friends of the Ecuador & Galapagos Islands Community Service Program,

Time on this trip is moving so fast. We can´t believe it is almost over! We are currently in San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands. Our time here has been wonderful. We went kayaking in the ocean in the morning and saw a sting ray and a sea turtle. After that we got to go on a boat ride, which was extremely fun. Our boat stopped half way through our journey, so that we could snorkel. Everyone loved seeing the different kinds of fish, especially Josh and Andrew, who kept deep diving to get a closer look. Alex C. really enjoyed the boat ride because he got to sit up top with the captain! As we docked at San Cristobal we saw a ton of sea lions, and all the trip members got a lot of great pictures. Samantha really enjoyed seeing the adorable creatures, and kept pointing them out, so that we could all see them.

For our first day of service we layed rocks for the foundation of the Boy Scout Recreation Center. The work was hard, but very rewarding. Sam B., Kyle, Russell, and Andrew volunteered first, and worked on separating the rocks from the sand, so that we could make concrete. They did a fantastic job, and were really sweaty by the end. Lisa and Alli proved their strength once again by moving rocks bigger than we thought possible. Matt helped make sure that every crack was filled and level. We wouldn´t have succeeded if he wasn´t there helping. The two men we worked with were very hard workers, and kept everyone on task. They showed everyone how to hand mix cement and how to pour it. The group formed a line and passed the bucket from one end to the other. This made the work go much faster, and we all enjoyed working together.

After our day of service we had another opportunity to go snorkeling. We went to Darwin´s Bay and swam with the sea lions. Crystal loved how much fun swimming with them was, and took at least a hundred pictures with her underwater camera. Dinner was delicious, and for Danni´s birthday we all got chocolate rolls. After dinner we stopped at the local bakery and the trip members bought out the store. Everything tasted wonderful, and everyone made sure to share.

Our second day of service looked a lot like our first, but this time we were experts at mixing cement. We got right to work and once again formed our line to make the work go faster. This time Mollie was at the end making sure the buckets were really empty before passing them to the next group. Each person passed the bucket by tossing it down the line. Morgan was our team captain, and Sam R. kept the line on task. Eventually it became a game of who could catch the bucket one handed with their non-dominant hand. Sam R. won with a record of 20 catches in a row. Alexandra and Lauren finished out the line, where they would hand the bucket to Haleigh and Lisa, who filled them again for round two.

During our service a few of our more artistic members began working on the 360° sign that would be on display. Those that helped design the sign, paint it, and make sure it was beautiful were Jackie, Rebecca, Danni, Morgan, and Haleigh. Each of them did a great job, and their sign will be proof of their hard work. We are loving our time here, and are sad that our last day is fast approaching.

We have finished our service and will be playing hard the rest of the trip. We look forward to seeing everyone at home, and telling them all about our amazing journey.

Aloha family and friends of Hawaii Community Service!

Since the last time we have touched base with you, we have hopped from one Hawaiian island to another and have had some amazing cultural experiences and adventures. We even had a celebrity sighting in Paia (Owen Wilson!). We attended a luau, where we watched a spectacular fire show, hula dancing, and indulged in local delicacies such as pineapple pie. We learned the hula and traditional Hawaiian chants together. We made leis for one another and shared the traditional ritual of offering a wish for our friends as we placed leis around each other’s necks. This recognizable Hawaiian emblem will forever have greater significance to our trip members.

Our community service on Maui has consisted of three days at the Boys and Girls Club, as well as environmental service with “Nature Jay”. Both of these experiences have held their own highlights and memorable moments. The relaxed and welcoming nature of the Boys and Girls Club allowed our trip members to feel that they were going in as peers, and leaving as friends. Throughout our three days at the club, one could find Sarah making club members laugh while playing Apples to Apples, Zoe and Rhea being covered in glitter as they did arts and crafts, or Tori, Elyse, Kaylie and Jordie being amused by the kids’ ghost stories.  Noah and Alex competed with the club members in flag football, and joined Marc, Paige and Sara for a game of baseball where everyone managed to keep up the intensity and the fun at the same time! The variety of sports continued with Sara, Paige, Alex, and Jillian playing soccer with the group. The sports that everyone enjoyed were perfectly balanced with the display of musical talents that the club members put on for our trip members. Justine, Molly, Jordie, Haylee, and Kaylie had a preview of the next stars to come out of Hawaii as they enjoyed the girls’ acapella performances and amazing ukulele performances! A definite highlight was the dance and karaoke performance by one of the club’s youngest members, encouraged by Alexa to show off his talents. As we left the Boys and Girls Club, our new friends made it seem that it had been much more than three short days we had known them.

We have also had our first day with “Nature Jay” (and Epo the super-dog!), a fascinating guide who shared his wealth of knowledge about Hawaiian history and culture, and his passion for the environment, with us. Before a swim in two epic waterfalls in Iao Valley, we had the opportunity to participate in clean-up of the area. We hiked a trail to the first waterfall, while we drove to the second that was tucked like a hidden treasure in the heart of the valley. Rhea and Justine just could not seem to get enough pictures of the scenery of this area! At the same time, trip members already showed that they understood Nature Jay’s message about taking care of the environment – Jordie and Marc gladly collected garbage from the waterfall areas and made sure that they were left pure.

Our last few days here in Hawaii promise to be action-packed, and full of highlights fitting of the end of our trip! Stay tuned for updates on ziplining, snorkeling and another surfing adventure!

One last Aloha!

Here we are on Maui for one last full day of fun and sun! For the past few days, we’ve been running around Maui, experiencing everything the island has to offer before taking off on Saturday night. On Tuesday, we had one last chance to ride the Hawaiian waves, and we travelled to the town of Kihei to have an afternoon of surfing. Janey, Jordyn, and Tyler all rode the waves like experts. Tuesday evening we drove over to Lahaina for a Ohana (family) dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, and a game of Mini Putt. The trip was offered a prize of an ice cream cone for the best score, which Jonah quickly made clear would be his. Jacob also won an ice cream by getting a hole in one on the 18th hole!

On Wednesday we made a trip up Haleakala Mountain, which is a dormant volcano and also the highest mountain on the island, to experience ziplining through the Eucalyptus trees. Molly and Sarah screamed out of excitement as they went down the last zipline which was 750 feet up and 150 feet across! That night we went into Paia to experience the amazing pizza of the Flatbread Company and also to scope out celebrities. We had heard that Owen Wilson had been spotted there the night before! Unfortunately we left without any spottings.

Yesterday, we had a snorkel cruise scheduled, which turned out to be the highlight of the week for many of us. The first stop for the cruise was a small bird island called Molokini which rises out of the water in the shape of the horseshoe or a big C. The snorkeling there was fantastic, with lots of tropical fish and colourful coral! Ethan Si., Ethan Sc., and Taylor all had an amazing time floating around watching the fish swim beneath them and taking underwater pictures. The second stop of the trip was at an island called Lana’i, 25 miles away. Snorkeling in the warm and turquoise water there made it an experience to remember. Anna and Eric both swam around for a long time loving the new perspective on sea life.

Even though the trip is coming to a close, we’re still taking in everything this beautiful island has to offer, and enjoying every moment of our time together! We’ll be sad to say goodbye, but also grateful that the trip happened!

See you all soon!
Kevin & Christine
