Upon arriving in the Adriatic seaside resort of Rimini, everyone was happy to get straight to the beach. Steph P., Shelby, Lori, Madison Y and Amanda tanned on their lounge chairs. Bari, Matt and Eric rented paddle boats and had fun going down the slide while Dean, Will, and Adam S. dived right into the water.  Jess also learned the easy lesson that the only thing better than gelato in Venice is gelato on the beach in Rimini.

After a great beach day, we headed out for a night on the town.  Armed with fresh tans, the group was ready to hit up our first Italian dance club.  Alex, Jon, and Jason S. showed Italy how Americans like to Dance. Rachel, Carly Z. and Lisa were the true dancing queens of the evening.  Ben L. was declared the king of the dance floor.

After a fun night, the group was ready to return to the beach for another day of rest and relaxation. The group then got ready for a fun evening surprise. David announced the surprise of mini-golf and gelato.  Adam S., Brandon, and Ben H. proved to be the Tiger Woods of the group with their golf skills.

With our beach days complete, the trip chariot headed off to Rome. When in Rome, it goes without saying that the best way to start off a stay is to have a traditional roman toga party.  Justin, Ben R., Zack L. and Tyler rocked the toga style and had a tough time readjusting to the 21st century after the party.  Emily even sang and danced with the waiters dressed as Roman warriors.   After a dinner back in time, we headed to the famous Trevi Fountain where Steph B., Cassidy, and Madison M. followed tradition by throwing coins and making a wish.

Our guided tour showed us all of what Rome had to offer. After a stop at the Pantheon, we went to the Colosseum with our beloved tour guide Mario.  Although we were about 2,000 years late for the gladiator fight, Adam B., Bryan, Ty, and Jason E. made sure to take advantage of the photo opportunities.  Danielle and Sarah S even took a picture with a man dressed as a gladiator.  The Roman experience continued with a dinner at Piazza Navona. Ben F., Julian, Richie, and Mike made sure to enjoy their Italian dinner, while Jess, Matt, and Zack L. appreciated their final serving of Roman gelato.

On the way down the Amalfi Coast to the town of  Sorrento we stopped at Pompeii for a tour of the ruins. Kelly, Alyssa, David, Jason S, Jason E and Richie were spotted taking pics on the mosaic sidewalks which were covered in ash after the eruption.

Today we had an amazing day on the Isle of Capri. We enjoyed some free time for lunch and exploring the beautiful gardens and views. In the afternoon we took a boat to circle the island and swim through the grottos. Cassidy, Jess and Zack F. were the first off the boat and kept jumping in for more at every stop. We’re having a great time traveling around Italy and can’t wait to visit Positano tomorrow!

Ciao for now,

Dearest friends and family!

We drove from Rimini to Rome, anxiously awaiting our first opportunity to utter the words, “When in Rome do as the Romans do”! (Sam W. was the first to set the trend). Our first stop was to a traditional Roman restaurant where trip members experienced a real-life toga party, complete with festive attire for everyone. Emily B. and Allie L. looked like natives in their new togas, while Emily G. and Mel came prepared with braided belts to supplement their outfits. After a few minutes, an Italian opera singer accompanied by a very talented accordion played just for us. Sammy F., Brooke and Josh were rewarded for their enthusiasm with tambourines to play with the band. After an active meal, we proceeded to the Trevi Fountain, famous for making wishes come true based on how many coins you surrender. Marielle, Lindsey, and Stephanie each threw two coins for love while Abby, Liza and Jen threw three, which signified that they’d all return to Rome. First stop in the morning was for a guided tour of the Vatican, where trip members, especially Dani and Alexa, marveled at Michelangelo’s intricate paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Although we didn’t catch a glimpse of the Pope, we were lucky enough to wander through St. Peter’s Basilica in his footsteps. Following the Vatican, we were led through the city by our engaging tour guide who showed us some of Rome’s best local restaurants. Soon after, we took a trip to the past when we visited the ancient coliseum. We tried as hard as we could to take in as much of the enormous coliseum as possible. Whitney, Jillian and Gabby allowed their imaginations to take over traveling back in time to when gladiators and animals fought in front of more than 50,0000 people. And this season on The Amazing Race: five teams battle it out in the first leg of Discovery’s version of the successful television show. The journey took us from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi Fountain, the first pit stop, where the trip members took a group picture and proceeded to bolt to the Pantheon for another group photo before heading off to the final check point at Piazza Navona. Groups showed their pictures to Trip Director Adam and were ranked for their departure times when the race actually begins. Allison’s team consisting of Lauren W., Jake, Ilana, Emily L., Jessie W., Zach, Rachel, Lauren B., and Josh secured first place, naming themselves “Team Roses and Thorns”.

After a fun-filled day, we rested up for Pompeii, where the ruins would soon enlighten us all. The tour was remarkably interesting.  Anthony, Dylan and Melanie all described the ruins as one of the most interesting things they have ever seen. Now, off to Sorrento and we can already smell the lemons!

Buon giorno friends and families of On Tour European Experience,

The following details of our trip are perfectly bookended with two great beach visits. Our first stop was at the beach in Rimini. A great town frequented by Europeans for their vacations. During our time there, many Trip Members found themselves on the beach volleyball and basketball courts. Troy, Jeff and Josh beat Henry, Mitch and Cody La. in a friendly game of basketball.  Those who decided to take it easy did as the locals do and layed out on great lounge chairs and enjoyed 2 relaxing days beach side. Valentin enjoyed relaxing on the beach and found the water really nice. Our first night in Rimini was a night we will all remember. We hit up a local club called Life and danced the night away to familiar and even some not so familiar songs. Julio had a great time at the club. The club was lots of fun and a great night was had by all. Our second night was more competitive in nature. Those who have golf experience got to show their skills, in mini putt form. Brooke and Allie had a great time mini golfing and really enjoyed the gelato later on that night.

Day 18 we arrived at the nation’s capital of Rome or as it is called in Italian, Roma.  Our toga party was lots of fun especially since we wore traditional Roman togas and were serenaded by 2 wonderful Italian opera singers. Definitely a great experience.  Michael embraced this very authentic meal and enjoyed every minute. No trip to Italy is complete without visiting one of the most famous fountains in Italy and possibly in the world. Trip 46 headed off to Trevi Fountain and were given free time to explore, people watch and even pick up some delicious gelato! Lots of great photo opps were had and the group got to see one of the great attractions Rome has to offer. Sarah was most looking forward to the famous fountain and was very pleased with what she saw and took part in the ritualistic coin tossing and wish making. Jordan and Kaela also loved the fountain and made their own wishes when they threw coins in the fountain!

Continuing with great experiences the wonderful weather of Rome was waiting for us along with our tour guide Mario on the morning of day 19. We had a great time traveling back in time thousands of years and visiting the Coliseum, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon. Boone really enjoyed the architecture of the Coliseum and was amazed that it is still standing almost two thousand years later. Ethan was impressed by the sheer size of the structure and the history of the city.  We also walked through one of the most famous churches in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica, but not before seeing Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel. We learned from Mario that chapel was painting more to Michelangelo’s liking than the pope’s at the time. We also
learned that as Michelangelo moved through the progression of the panels, his attention to detail and the size of the characters
decreased and increased respectively. Mario explained to us that it was because if Michelangelo maintained that same detail and character size, he would have never finished the ceiling. He noted that it was hard enough for the artist to paint upside down, to do it for what may have been forever, was not what Michelangelo signed up for. Cody Litman was very impressed by the Sistine Chapel and loved the explanations Mario provided on the tour. Dinner in small groups that night was a lot of fun as the groups were given the opportunity to explore Piazza Navona, a small square in Rome that has street performers and local artists trying to intrigue tourists with their various forms of art and entertainment. Following dinner, many Trip Members indulged in some gelato and enjoyed the various sights and sounds. Musicians, mimes, and even tap dancers all had us watching with glee.

Following our time travel to the past in Rome, we did not want to miss another amazing chance to learn about Italy’s past. As we made our way to Sorrento, we stopped in Pompei, a city of ruins. The city is located very close to Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano. Not to worry folks, research is constantly being done to calculate the next eruption and it is not anytime in the near future, so they say! We are thankful for that, after the devastation the eruption that occurred in the first century AD caused.  We walked through the ruins and saw old homes and buildings that withstood the ash and chemical gases released almost 2 millenia ago. Alanna really enjoyed the history and took some great pictures of the remains. We learned a lot walking through the city but jumped back on the bus and continued to Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast.   Lucky for us, there was a street festival taking place and the main road was lined with small street vendors and goodies for any and all to enjoy. Sara took this opportunity to enjoy a delicious cotton candy. A small concert and an Italian play was taking place in the town center square while most boutiques and shops seemed to remain open on the side streets of Sorrento.

Day 21 began with a boat ride to an island about 30 minutes from the mainland of Sorrento. On Tour European Experience had the great pleasure of visiting the chic island of Capri. We took the funicular, a cablecar/elevator ride up to the top of the island where Trip Members had lunch and a chance to see where Hollywood’s most famous celebrities shop and dine. Reid along with Ryan, Jimmy, Joe, Cody La., Sammy, Bobby and Brad all enjoyed lunch at Aurora, Capri’s most famous restaurant to the stars. Isabelle had a great time in this area and was very excited for the boat tour later that day. After lunch we headed down to the water for an exciting boat tour of the island. We saw the green and red grottos and water so blue we could see 30 feet down. Melissa and David O. found the blue grottos in particular very beautiful and enjoyed our boat ride very much. Raquel and Ari rode on the same boat through the grottos and enjoyed every minute of it.  We passed by yachts owned by designer Valentino and the Princess of Jordan. Hayley loved Capri and wishes she could have her own yacht there someday.  We also saw the famous 3 rock formation in the water for which Capri is famous. Legend says that if a couple kisses as they pass through the small tunnel, they will have eternal love. After dinner we went to a disco/karaoke club with a dance floor.

Day 22 was the beach bookend to this update. We ventured off again on another boat but this time we actually remained in the mainland, but a 45 minute boat ride to the other side of the island. On Tour European Experience spent the day beach side in Positano. A beautiful city nestled in a cliff overlooking the Amalfi coast was where On Tour European Experience hung out. Ilana and Hannah both enjoyed the beauty of the city and loved the refreshing pebble beach. Ilana also enjoyed the most delicious pineapple she ever ate. The water was the perfect temperature in which to cool off especially after Troy, Jake, Jack, David J., Jeff took a nice trek up the cliff for a delicious meal with a beautiful view of Positano’s marina and beach. After a great day at the beach, Trip Members got ready in their best night attire for dinner and dancing. This time three Westcoast Connection/ 360 Student Travel trips were hitting up the dance floor to see which Trip Members have the best dance moves. Cameron and Ilyssa had a great time at the club along with the rest of the Westcoast and 360 Student Travel trips that night.

A day in Italy has not been complete for Andrea without gelato. She was very excited when she found a gelateria in Sorrento that had 80 flavors. She chose nutella and stracciatella, which is chocolate chip.

Just a few more days in wonderful Italy and then it is back to France. We are on our way to Florence today and can’t wait to climb the Duomo and see Michelangelo’s David. We hope you are just as excited for us.

Arrivaderci,
On Tour European Experience gang

Greetings from Italia!

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm Venezian sun, which shone down on trip members as they rode into town by Vaparetto. Once docked on the island, we enjoyed an authentically Italian feast. Jacob W. thought the pesto gnocchi was a treat for his tastebuds while Gabe, Zach and Rob devoured generous portions of other delicious, homemade cuisine. Eager to start a new day in Venezia, we woke up just in time to do some more sight-seeing and exploration. While walking, we discovered many outdoor produce markets where Jessie W., Ilana B., and Brooke ate the freshest fruit to ever touch their lips. Later on, we each embraced our inner-romantic side while riding the magical Venezian gondola. Lindsey, Lauren W., Steph and Marielle even got so lucky as to ride behind a boat that featured a traditional Italian vocalist/accordion player, (our very own second-hand serenade!).  Afterwards, we traveled the streets of Venice until we found the perfect combination of bistros and cafes for dinner. Marisa and Sam F. shared some of Italy’s best “quatro formaggio” pizza, while Michael and Max left no noodle behind from their spaghetti Bolognese.

First thing the next morning, we arrived in Rimini, a beach town in Italy and the weather has been nothing less than perfect. Before ever stepping foot off the bus, trip members could smell the salty sea and feel the warm sand between their toes. Once on the beach, Sammy F., Emily L. and Liza took full advantage of the water, swimming around and playfully splashing each other.  Lauren B., Lizzie and Whitney were most excited to soak up the rays, lounging on beach chairs for maximum bronzing power. Other trip members like Alex K., Alex S. and Eric couldn’t wait to get a refreshing scoop of Rimini’s famous gelato. Later on, we put on our best moves and danced the night away at one of Rimini’s hottest discos. Richard, Alexa, Natasha and Brent worked the dance floor, while Hailey D., a natural dance-star, impressed us all with her sweet moves. We left all of our energy on that dance floor, having the absolute time of our lives. We rode the disco bus home, where Gabby and Kim doubled over with laughter as they reflected on a great night. A million giggles and a few new tan lines bring us to today, where we will bask in the Italian sun once more.

Sending all of our love from Italia,

All of us on the European Discovery Trip

As we made our way to Venice, we were all surprised by the beautiful and warm weather, as it was quite a change from the top of the glacier in breathtaking Zermatt. We were very excited to finally be in Italy and enjoy its infamous pizza and pasta. Brooke and Katie were amazed by how beautiful the city was, they were thrilled to be in Venice. Our first night in concluded with all trip members enjoying a swim in the pool on the roof-top of the hotel looking over the city.

Our second day in Venice brought many exciting things. We started off our morning in the Jewish Ghetto where we took a guided tour in the synagogue. The trip members were interested to find out that the ghetto in Venice is the oldest of all the ghettos in the world. Gil and Hayley really enjoyed the amazing pizza from one of the delicious kosher restaurants there. After spending the morning in the Jewish ghetto, Evan was extremely excited to have time to explore the town with his group and negotiate a deal for a fedora hat. In the afternoon, Gilly, Colton and Valerie were looking forward to watching the glass blowing demonstrations at the famous Murano glass factory. Damion, a thirty-five year glass blowing expert created a beautiful vase and a glass horse right before our eyes! The trip members were fascinated by Damion’s talent and were excited to browse around the factory to see what other treasures they could find, now knowing how much work goes into creating these masterpieces.

Later in the day, the trip divided up into five teams to participate in a little friendly competition with a game of People Hunt. The object of this challenge is to find people that match the clues you are given by the trip leaders. Dani M, Mayra, Hayley, Eliza and Lindsay came in first place, finding the most people to answer their questions. Our night was concluded by enjoying a relaxing gondola ride and gelato in St. Marco square at sunset. What better way to end our time in this amazingly interesting place!

As we left Venice and continued our journey to Rimini, Danielle S, Megan and Ben were psyched for beach time. We created new memories while spending the afternoon lounging by the beach and playing in the water. Valerie impressed us with her volleyball skills when she played volleyball against Tour Director, Bryan. Hayley and Mayra couldn’t wait to hit the dance floor that night when we headed to the disco! Watching all the trip members dancing together was such a sight to see! Their smiling faces truly made our day!

After a fun-filled night at the disco, our last day in Rimini was concluded with mini-putt golf, gelato and frozen yogurt as well as an early celebratory dinner in honor of Jessie’s “Sweet 16” birthday!

We are very excited to tour Rome and to finally see the Coliseum and Vatican- two places that we have heard so much about! Fedoras off as we make our way through our last week of the best European tour ever!
