The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa.

Although designed to stand vertically, the tower began to lean shortly after construction began in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and unstable soil that allowed the foundation to shift. When the Pisans entered war, construction was stopped allowing the underlying soil to settle. If construction had continued, the tower would have toppled.

Construction started again over a century later. Engineers tried to compensate for the tilt by making upper floors taller on one side than the other. This made the tower lean in the other direction.

The tower is 183 feet from the ground on the lowest side and 186 feet from the ground on the highest side. At the base, the walls are 13 feet apart. At the top, the walls are 8 feet apart.

The tower has two staircases. The north-facing staircase has two fewer steps (294) than the south-facing staircase (296).

Prior to restoration work that was performed in 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees. The tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. This means that the tower is over 12 feet from where it would stand if the tower were perfectly vertical.

The scaffolding on the tower is there to help repair visual damage (mostly corrosion and blackening).

On January 7, 1990, the tower was closed to the public for fear that it would collapse. The bells were removed to relieve some weight and cables were tied around the third level and anchored several meters away. Apartments and houses in the path of the tower were vacated. In the end, 50 cubic yards of soil were removed from underneath the higher end. The tower was straightened, returning it to the exact position that it occupied in 1838. After a decade of corrective reconstruction and stabilization efforts, the tower was reopened on December 15, 2001. In May 2008, another 77 tons of earth were removed. For the first time the tower’ history, engineers declared the tower stable.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is no longer the world’s most lopsided building. That title was been taken by a German church steeple in Suurhusen which leans at 5.19 degrees.

Bonjour from the South of France!!!

We have finished our visit of Italy… great sites and more amazing food!

I’m writing to you as we leave our final Italian site, Pisa, on route to Nice, the final stop on our tour.

It’s been an incredible ride through Italy…We went from Venice to Rimini.  Rimini was full of relaxation.  We started it off with an evening round of mini-putt, where everybody let their competitive side out.  The next two days were BEACH DAYS!  Catching the waves, going down water slides, playing Knights, Calvary, and Barbarian, building sand castles, and playing football – American style.  Let’s not forget to mention that we all got to work on our tans and the gelato was delicious.  In Rimini, we experienced our first taste of a European Disco.  Techno music was going through our heads until the early morning.

After our revitalization on the beach, we headed to the historic city of Rome.  We took pictures at the Trevi Fountain and all made wishes tossing in a coin over our shoulder.  We had a busy following day in Rome: a guided city tour, the Vatican Museum, Coliseum…who could want anything more.  Then on the way to Sorrento, we visited the Ruins of Pompeii, the city that was partially buried by Mt. Vesuvius during a volcanic eruption.  Our first dinner in Sorrento, we were serenaded by a pianist who made our dinner so inviting.  The next day we took a charted yacht around the island of Capri.  We got to swim through the green grotto – so beautiful and picturesque.  We walked around the island of Capri, saw the beautiful gardens and then jumped in the Adriatic Sea to cool off.  The next day, it was time to move on to our last city in Italy, Florence.  In Florence, we got to barter at the Leather Market – some great skills I must say and some of us are coming home with amazing leather jackets, belts, and purses.  In Florence, we also got to experience the Synagogue, we climbed the Duomo Tower, and made our own Italian style dinner at our Tuscan Cooking School – we learned how to make spaghetti noodles from scratch, spinach crepes, stuffed zucchini, and dessert. Our final day in Florence was spent experiencing the historical culture of Florence in the Galleries – we saw Michalengelo’s David and evenings of action packed disco dancing!

Now we are in Nice…the final stop on our 32 day journey. It is sad to realize that the trip is coming to an end.

It’s amazing the growth of the group from day 1 to 29! We have learned a lot from our teenagers.  It was our staff mission that each teenager would return home embracing the culture, sights, sounds, and tastes of Europe. We are so proud as our mission is 2 days away from being accomplished.

Until next time…enjoy your summer and we’ll talk soon!

The European Experience ends a great trip in Florence.

Bonjourno from Florence!

Our last Italian stop was an adventurous one! After check -in, we headed over to a nice romantic spot where we enjoyed a delicious italian feast. Afterward, we enjoyed 3 large scoops of delicious gelato flavors at a chic gelato place! Back at the hotel, a euchre tournament was set up – a card game that got lots of attention when we took our first Chunnel ride from London to Paris! Matt and Dillon, Jordan Z. and Kyle S., and Jared and Austin were some of the teams that partook in the tournament. Our first day in Florence was filled with lots of exploring time in the leather markets, while some others took a walk to the old synagogue which is still in use and holds a few hundred people. After the tour, we all met at the Duomo, an extremely large church and cathedral where we all marched up 461 narrow and twisty steps to the top to get a breathtaking view of the city of Florence. I am pleased and proud to say everyone made it up!

We stopped off for a late lunch and headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner! For the first time, we headed out to cooking school where groups split up to cook and prep a portion of our meal. Our pasta was made by Bari, Morgan, Austin and Stef. Our stuffed zucchini was hand crafted by Jared and Dan G. Our savory spinach and cheese crepes were made Adam, Eric, Amy, Brooke and Amanda. Dessert was prepared by Taylor, Kyle W., Megan, Rachel, Caroline, Jamie, Jared, and Melissa. We were all very impressed with all the meals and everyone enjoyed the food we made for one another and got a great experience cooking in an Italian kitchen with trained professional chefs! We headed back to the hotel for a quick shower and headed to Space Electronic Disco where we enjoyed a great fun night full of dancing ! We marched on for a late night snack after the disco and got ready for our next day.

Day 2 in Florence started with a guided tour of the Accademia museum where the world famous “David” is being displayed. After our personally guided museum tour, we headed over to Ponte Vecchio, a famous bridge that happens to be covered in gold and silver. Mikey (our very own WCC tour guide) led some of us through the Uffizi museum and explained all the famous art work. We learned Mikey’s passion for art, and she was truly amazing at explaining the details to us!

For the first time, we had a boys night out for dinner and enjoyed a great meal at a lounge club. We shared memories, had many laughs and met up with the girls for our last gelato in Italy at the world famous Vivoli’s. We each got 3 scoops and we enjoyed every last bit of it!

Our day trip to Pisa was one big photo day! Everyone had to take the cleverest pictures with the tower and we’ll see who wins tonight at our banquet. We had a nice lunch, and then drove into Monte Carlo for some walking time and a zesty and tasty dinner! We marched to the Marina after dinner to relax and enjoy the views and fancy lifestyle and finally drove into Nice, France for our final day of the trip! We will be going to the beach tomorrow and having a nice banquet dinner that will bring back many memories.

We hope that you have enjoyed keeping up with the trip! We have an incredible group here and it was a pleasure getting to know each and every single one of them!

Sincerely,

The European Experience
