The final update from the European Experience.

The Westcoast Blogger

The trip has come to an end and we have said our tearful goodbyes. Lane could not have said it any better when she reminded us of how lucky we were to be walking away with great memories and even better friends! The last few days were definitely among the best. Florence was a great opportunity to put our newly learned knowledge of European cuisine and culture to test. Some explored the famous leather markets while others went to the Duomo, Florence fresh food markets and the Uffizi Gallery. A couple of campers went with Adam for dinner of their choice and had blueberry steak. They all raved it was the best meal of the trip! Others enjoyed Italian cuisine which to us never is a wrong decision, especially when you finish it off with a gelato. Then we all dance the night away at the disco that evening.

Our final night in Florence the group took part in a scavenger hunt having to do everything from find the lucky hog to serve gelato. Allie, Stephen, Layne, Ali,Rob and Nicole finished in first place and won the much anticipated prize.

Our final stop in Nice was enjoyed by some well deserved beach relaxation and of course quality time together. We all walked the city and explored the busy streets of cafes and shops. That evening we visited the renowned Monte Carlo Casino which reminded us of our amazing surroundings, letting us truly appreciate the beauty of Europe. Out group enjoyed a great dinner overlooking the water and evening landscape. Our final night was spent together on the beach as we shared our most memorable experiences and together said goodbye to what has been a summer never to forget.

Can’t wait to see you all very soon (a little more tanned and certainly more cultured) and thanks to all your warm wishes and support throughout the summer!

Bonjour from the South of France!!!

We have finished our visit of Italy… great sites and more amazing food!

I’m writing to you as we leave our final Italian site, Pisa, on route to Nice, the final stop on our tour.

It’s been an incredible ride through Italy…We went from Venice to Rimini.  Rimini was full of relaxation.  We started it off with an evening round of mini-putt, where everybody let their competitive side out.  The next two days were BEACH DAYS!  Catching the waves, going down water slides, playing Knights, Calvary, and Barbarian, building sand castles, and playing football – American style.  Let’s not forget to mention that we all got to work on our tans and the gelato was delicious.  In Rimini, we experienced our first taste of a European Disco.  Techno music was going through our heads until the early morning.

After our revitalization on the beach, we headed to the historic city of Rome.  We took pictures at the Trevi Fountain and all made wishes tossing in a coin over our shoulder.  We had a busy following day in Rome: a guided city tour, the Vatican Museum, Coliseum…who could want anything more.  Then on the way to Sorrento, we visited the Ruins of Pompeii, the city that was partially buried by Mt. Vesuvius during a volcanic eruption.  Our first dinner in Sorrento, we were serenaded by a pianist who made our dinner so inviting.  The next day we took a charted yacht around the island of Capri.  We got to swim through the green grotto – so beautiful and picturesque.  We walked around the island of Capri, saw the beautiful gardens and then jumped in the Adriatic Sea to cool off.  The next day, it was time to move on to our last city in Italy, Florence.  In Florence, we got to barter at the Leather Market – some great skills I must say and some of us are coming home with amazing leather jackets, belts, and purses.  In Florence, we also got to experience the Synagogue, we climbed the Duomo Tower, and made our own Italian style dinner at our Tuscan Cooking School – we learned how to make spaghetti noodles from scratch, spinach crepes, stuffed zucchini, and dessert. Our final day in Florence was spent experiencing the historical culture of Florence in the Galleries – we saw Michalengelo’s David and evenings of action packed disco dancing!

Now we are in Nice…the final stop on our 32 day journey. It is sad to realize that the trip is coming to an end.

It’s amazing the growth of the group from day 1 to 29! We have learned a lot from our teenagers.  It was our staff mission that each teenager would return home embracing the culture, sights, sounds, and tastes of Europe. We are so proud as our mission is 2 days away from being accomplished.

Until next time…enjoy your summer and we’ll talk soon!

The European Experience ends a great trip in Florence.

Bonjourno from Florence!

Our last Italian stop was an adventurous one! After check -in, we headed over to a nice romantic spot where we enjoyed a delicious italian feast. Afterward, we enjoyed 3 large scoops of delicious gelato flavors at a chic gelato place! Back at the hotel, a euchre tournament was set up – a card game that got lots of attention when we took our first Chunnel ride from London to Paris! Matt and Dillon, Jordan Z. and Kyle S., and Jared and Austin were some of the teams that partook in the tournament. Our first day in Florence was filled with lots of exploring time in the leather markets, while some others took a walk to the old synagogue which is still in use and holds a few hundred people. After the tour, we all met at the Duomo, an extremely large church and cathedral where we all marched up 461 narrow and twisty steps to the top to get a breathtaking view of the city of Florence. I am pleased and proud to say everyone made it up!

We stopped off for a late lunch and headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner! For the first time, we headed out to cooking school where groups split up to cook and prep a portion of our meal. Our pasta was made by Bari, Morgan, Austin and Stef. Our stuffed zucchini was hand crafted by Jared and Dan G. Our savory spinach and cheese crepes were made Adam, Eric, Amy, Brooke and Amanda. Dessert was prepared by Taylor, Kyle W., Megan, Rachel, Caroline, Jamie, Jared, and Melissa. We were all very impressed with all the meals and everyone enjoyed the food we made for one another and got a great experience cooking in an Italian kitchen with trained professional chefs! We headed back to the hotel for a quick shower and headed to Space Electronic Disco where we enjoyed a great fun night full of dancing ! We marched on for a late night snack after the disco and got ready for our next day.

Day 2 in Florence started with a guided tour of the Accademia museum where the world famous “David” is being displayed. After our personally guided museum tour, we headed over to Ponte Vecchio, a famous bridge that happens to be covered in gold and silver. Mikey (our very own WCC tour guide) led some of us through the Uffizi museum and explained all the famous art work. We learned Mikey’s passion for art, and she was truly amazing at explaining the details to us!

For the first time, we had a boys night out for dinner and enjoyed a great meal at a lounge club. We shared memories, had many laughs and met up with the girls for our last gelato in Italy at the world famous Vivoli’s. We each got 3 scoops and we enjoyed every last bit of it!

Our day trip to Pisa was one big photo day! Everyone had to take the cleverest pictures with the tower and we’ll see who wins tonight at our banquet. We had a nice lunch, and then drove into Monte Carlo for some walking time and a zesty and tasty dinner! We marched to the Marina after dinner to relax and enjoy the views and fancy lifestyle and finally drove into Nice, France for our final day of the trip! We will be going to the beach tomorrow and having a nice banquet dinner that will bring back many memories.

We hope that you have enjoyed keeping up with the trip! We have an incredible group here and it was a pleasure getting to know each and every single one of them!

Sincerely,

The European Experience

Let’s see what going on with Backpack Europe!

To the Parents of Trip #50,

Why hello there, it’s us again giving a little update about our backpacking trip!

We’ve been having a blast and particularly enjoyed our first stop in Italy where we stayed in La Spezia but visited all five villages of Cinque Terra. If you’ve talked to your son/daughter, you probably know when we say “visited” we mean we literally hiked along a beautiful trail along the coast between all five, stopping in each! This was definitely a highlight for the group – to feel the accomplishment of 12 miles of walking, Whitney and Devyn in particular mentioned how great it felt to finish it. The mountains jutting down into the blue ocean was enough to blow you away, but to travel on the trail made it all the more meaningful.

One of the days we also went to the Cinque Terra village of Monterosso, the best beach village. A lot of us grabbed our first piece of Italian pizza while at the beach catching rays (yum!). Sarah, Emily, and Bethany took relaxation to a whole other level by purchasing a massage from a local woman and Brandon, Sam, Alex, Whitney, Gary and Jamie caught their rays even closer to the water by choosing beach chairs without umbrellas to have a more sun-fun experience. Judah and Daniel successfully played Frisbee along the shore not once loosing the Frisbee among the crashing waves.  Many of us took the opportunity to do some of that coveted summer beach reading.

Although the beach is a highlight of any vacationer, Vernazza is the village that probably left the greatest impression. A fishing village that we took the train to one evening became the ‘dinner of the trip’ for Devyn, Benny, Abby F., Dan R., Judah, Polly and Bethany. In Devyn’s words, they got a soup filled with a smorgashboard of seafood and it was insane with 3 giant shrimp (which everyone got a particular amusement of Bethany’s reaction to the full-bodied shrimp, having to ask the waiter how to eat those large almost lobster-like in their presentation, shrimp). She also had the best pesto ever in her life. Her group even met and enjoyed conversation with their chef – and all of this was at a restaurant on the rocks overlooking the ocean. Even Sam who ate with her usual group of friends said this evening included a particularly “romantic” sunset dinner as the restaurant her group chose was along the shore and they could watch the sun setting over the water as they ate.

Well enough on our stay in La Spezia, we also had a great stay in Florence as well — visiting museums (saw the David!!), getting a walking tour of some of the city, peering down into the river, cooking our own Italian food (your son/daughter will be getting the recipes so this is a good opportunity for you to ask them to cook an authentic Italian meal for you when they return home). Shopping in the leather markets is clearly standout enjoyment for everyone as well, but just ask Abby H., Sam, Michelle, or a few of the boys about their deals/finds and you’ll understand even further what makes finding that perfect jacket, jewelry, t-shirt, or boxer shorts a highlight.

If you’re cruising through the pictures from Florence and wondering why there’s a picture with Jamie, Annica, Michelle, Abby F., Bethany, and Polly in things that look like blue sheets this is because to visit the Duomo your shoulders, etc. must be covered as respect for the church (so accidentally wearing a tank top on this day provided a fun photo-opp). Another fun thing to look for in the pictures is Michael’s classic peace-sign that he gives in many shots.

It has been amazing to see the great friendships that were made in only two weeks! We can’t wait to see what new ones will bud in our remaining days to come!!

We’ll be in touch soon, but for now we’re going to start enjoying the region of Umbria.

Ciao (Goodbye in Italian),
