Cheerio, European Discovery families and friends!

Once upon a time, there was a group of enthusiastic teenagers and six dedicated staff members, each a little bit different but with one crucial common goal: to share the summer of a lifetime with both new friends and old, creating memories that would last no less than forever. From eleven different states/provinces, our trip members fused together, and some 3,470 miles later, landed in London, England to begin an extraordinary journey. And so the story begins…

Once we collected everybody from the airport, we set off for the beautiful Notting Hill area to do some trip bonding and taste our first delicious bites of European cuisine. With bellies full and excitement in the air, we continued our day by soaking in a bit of British culture whilst exploring the busy streets of London.

Emily B. and Ilana B. were two of the first trip members to embrace English tradition by piling into one of London’s famous telephone booths.

Once day turned to night, we enjoyed our first group dinner at Wagamama, where Dylan and Lindsey kept everyone laughing with their vibrant senses of humor…and we haven’t stopped laughing yet. After an action-packed first day, we headed back to the hotel to rest up for yet another exciting day to come.

What an exciting day it was! Trip members were treated to the hilarious stylings of our tour guide extraordinaire. We saw everything there was to see: from the one-of-a-kind jewels housed at the London Tower, to the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace.

Natasha and Brooke toured London’s impressive collection of crown jewels while befriending a variety of guards on duty and Hailey D. joked, “remember the biggest cut diamond in the world? That’s gonna be my wedding ring, no big deal”. Later in the night, we had the extreme privilege of viewing an authentic English performance of Billy Elliot. Emily and Allie could have absolutely joined the cast, after we learned about their incredible dancing skills.

First thing in the next morning we ventured over to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, where trip members were able to get up close and personal with all of their favourite celebs and famous figures. While there, Jake E. Thought it would be funny if Rob posed with the stars, and a multitude of tourists crowded around taking pictures, thinking he was another wax VIP. Afterward, we set off for Harrods, in hopes of running into someone like Beyonce, who had been there just days before.

Raffy and Mel had the time of their lives while others explored the local shops nearby.

Marielle, Stephanie, Liza and Jen enjoyed Sunday in the most authentic way possible by going for high-tea during their free time.

Though three exhilarating days in the land of fish and chips have sadly come to a close, we are eager to continue immersing ourselves in the European lifestyle. With that said, we’re off to Amsterdam!

Ta ta for now,

Your European Discovery Staff

On Tour European Experience checks in from England.

Ello ello friends and families, mums and dads,

London has called and our trip has answered. It’s been a fantastic four days in England and we have had the chance of meeting new people, trying new foods and learning British history. Day one was a great success! After arriving in London’s Heathrow airport, bonding and new friendships quickly emerged. After a brief explanation about the opposite side driving in London we thought we had the concept down pat . However, some of us struggled to remember to “look left” even though it was written on the cross walks!

Some exploring in swanky Notting Hill and dinner at Asian Infusion style restaurant Wagamamas got us all psyched up for a great ride on the unique London Eye. Both Jordan and Ilana conquered their fear of heights as they looked out over the River Thames and stared Big Ben in the eye! Thanks to the great support of various trip members (especially Andrea), it will surely be a ride everyone will remember. Everyone thought the London Eye was a great way to see and introduce the city we would be visiting and experiencing for the first four days of the trip. After the 420-foot view of London, everyone was ready for their first night sleep after a long journey and a great first day.

On our second day in London, we had the great privilege of getting a wonderful tour from a born and raised Londoner named Liz. Jimmy found Liz to be both cheeky and sarcastic, living up to the true British humor whilst astutely exposing a thousand years of British history. We saw famous sites such as Westminster Abbey, The London Tower, the Crown Jewels and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Dinner at the original Hard Rock Cafe was a great experience especially because Hayley, Melissa, Boone, and Andrea were pleasantly surprised that the waiter was from Saskatchewan and because Sara ate an entire BBQ chicken without any assistance! Following dinner, Amanda and Melissa eagerly approached the theatre for their favorite musical Wicked – everyone enjoyed the performance. Cody, who saw the show for his first time, enjoyed it as much as Wicked veterans Raquel and Ariel. After the amazing show, we drove by Buckingham Palace while Jon, our esteemed resource expert/trip leader, educated us in a proper British accent about the facts of the Palace. We learned that there are 1514 doors, and 760 windows among other interesting tid-bits.

On day three of our trip we celebrated, with a beautifully decorated bus, the Confederation of Canada. Our Canadian trip members, Alanna, Ari, both Codys, Raquel and Sammy all helped the Americans with the Canadian national anthem. We sang in perfect harmony as we made our way to Harrods, London’s most famous department store. The trip members were put to the challenge when the staff asked that they find both the lowest and highest priced item in the store. Josh, David J., Sascha and Troy won as they found the highest priced item. For those of you of the curious nature, it was a flat in one of the ritzy parts of London and it was priced at £23 million. A fun-filled experience at Picadilly Circus allowed our trip members to take in the sights and sounds of London and its finest locals. The night came and we winded down with a delicious dinner and a fun spin on a hide and seek game in Kensington Park (location of Kensigton Palace, the late Princess Diana’s residence).

Stay tuned as we make our journey across the English Channel into Paris, France. It will surely be a new and exciting experience as we venture into a new country with a new currency and a foreign language.

Much love,

Trip Leader Robyn and Trip Member Alanna

Switzerland

Sweitz, La Suisse. This amazing little country has four official languages and though it occupies an area smaller than most U.S. states and has a population that is less than Manhattan, they manage to produce some incredible soccer talent.  Training at higher altitude gives this team the ability to show up physically fit and make up for some of the imbalance they have compared to the more talented European teams like Portugal, Spain and England.  The Swiss are considered minnows but for the past four World Cups that they have participated in, they have been a tough competitor. In 2006, they became the first team in the history of the cup to be knocked out without having conceded a goal (they were eliminated in the 2nd round in a penalty shootout with the Ukraine).

You can visit Switzerland while skiing or snowboarding in miraculous Zermatt or Tignes or gazing at breathtaking Interlaken on many of our programs in Europe including our European Discovery, European Escape, European Experience, European Escapade, Backpack France and Switzerland and Backpack Europe programs.

Spain

Can La Rojo be stopped?  When you think of soccer skills, everyone seems to think of Argentina and Brazil and thoughts of Pele and Maradona come to mind but since 2007 the best team in the world has truly been Spain. The winner of the 2008 European Cup, Spain oozes with talent. Up front they have two of the best in Liverpool’s Fernando Torres and Barcelona’s brand new signing David Villa (both of whom would be the starting forward on any team in the world). But it is in midfield where Spain just cannot be compared. Names like Xaxi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Xabi Alonso, David Silva and Pedro are enough to make any team unable to sleep at night. These guys play for teams like Barcelona, Valencia, Real Madrid and Arsenal and can move the ball like it is a part of their body. If there is one weakness with the Spaniards, it could be their defense. But when you are this good going forward, who needs defense!

With 360° Student Travel you can travel throughout Spain on our Language Immersion program called the Spanish Spectacular or spend your summer in Barcelona on our Pre-College Enrichment: Barcelona program.
