Dear Families of California & The Canyons,

After an amazing time in LA, we were on our way to beautiful San Diego. Before even checking into our hotel, we wasted no time and headed straight to the beach for surfing lessons! After an orientation on land to teach us the basics of the sport, we grabbed our boards and hit the waves where Ben S. and Gabriella wowed us when they surfed all way back to shore. As we were surfing, Olivia caught a glimpse of dolphins swimming in the distance. Back on shore, Joelle, Julia and Alice relaxed in the sand and took in the amazing view. Marc borrowed a guitar from one of the surfing instructors and played it for everyone.

For dinner, we ate at Islands where we decided to have a twin night and everyone needed to find a person on the trip to match with. Arianna and Elisa posed as perfectly coordinating twins, while Zach, Dan and Jason S. dressed as triplets. After dinner, we returned to the hotel where we shared some laughs when we played the dating game and Chloe and Zach ended up as a perfect pair.

Our second day in San Diego started with a trip to the San Diego Zoo. We began our visit with a double-decker bus tour through the park where we caught a glimpse elephants, grizzly bears, giraffes and more. Matt L., Clay, Jason S. and Jacob continued to explore the park as they got a bird’s eye view of the animals on the sky tram. Alex M., Ben S, Nick, Jack and Adam K. got an up close look at the pandas while Raina, Cassidy, Carly and Risa put on their best animal impersonations after getting their faces painted. Brian won a stuffed dog from a “claw” machine that he named Stefane and which has now joined Delilah as another bus mascot.

Later that night, we all had a blast playing laser tag where Austin L. and Joelle received the highest scores. At the end of the night and our time in San Diego, we tearfully said goodbye to Niki P., Sophie, Ben B., David Y., Jason A. and Austin L. who only joined us for the California portion of the trip.

After San Diego, we headed to Las Vegas. On the bus ride, we played an entertaining game of Humzinger where we took turns humming a tune while the rest of the group tried to guess the song. Alex P. did a great job of humming “Baby” by Justin Bieber and Carly immediately guessed the correct answer. After settling into the amazing Monte Carlo hotel, we feasted on a delicious Italian dinner and then headed for the Stratosphere.  The Stratosphere is a really tall hotel with a viewing tower and thrilling rides at the top of the building. Matt S., Eric, David R. and Joelle were brave enough to face the world’s tallest ride ‘The Big Shot’, while Emily O., Nikki B. and Courtney rode ‘X-Scream.’  Brooke, Gabriella, David S. and Jake then dared to ride ‘Insanity’. Everyone had tons of fun!

After taking in the breathtaking views of the Vegas lights atop of the tower, we explored the Venetian hotel.  Everyone was amazed by how well the hotel looks exactly like Venice, Italy. As we watched passing gondolas in the hotel’s indoor canals, Adam F. and Alex M. enjoyed a traditional Italian gelato. We then walked down the Las Vegas strip and were amazed by all the luxurious hotels such as Caesar’s Palace and The Bellagio.  We were all front and center for the water dancing show outside the Bellagio – what a sight!  Elisa, who is from Paris, got a taste of home as she posed for pictures in front of the Paris hotel which has a replica of the Eiffel Tower. The following day the group had some free time to enjoy the hotel’s incredible swimming pools and lazy river.  Eric, Marc, Emily O. and Dave R. also took advantage of the hotel’s wave pool. Later that evening, we headed to the New York, New York hotel which has restaurants setup to look like the streets of NYC.   Following dinner we had a blast in the Gameworks arcade where we played the night away.

The next day we drove to Bryce Canyon for our last two nights of camping.  Before arriving at the campsite we stopped for a Chuckwagon Cookout where everyone dressed up as cowboys and Indians and reenacted a traditional western motion picture, complete with sound effects and background music.  Raina and Carly played the coyotes; Jack was the fiddler; Courtlyn and Emily H were some of the Indians; Jake, Matt S and Brooke were the cowboy and cowgirl; and Alex M played the villain.

Upon arrival in Bryce, the group was split up into two teams for some fun campsite programming.  For the next two days everyone got really involved in the competitions.  Eric and Arianna were the winners of “Bite the Bag”.  Emily O. and David S took Trip Director Jesse’s challenge of learning all the lyrics to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”.  Alysa took the lead in a dance-off. Bobby and Nick were the head writers of their team skits.

We took a break from all the excitement to hike down Bryce Canyon whose postcard perfect views took everyone’s breath away.  All the trip members had a creative time posing for “epic photos” on the hike – check them out!  Everyone felt quite accomplished when they arrived at the bottom. In the late afternoon everyone participated in a giant relay race that was quite hysterical.  After a scrumptious stir-fry dinner, we laughed the night away making banana boats (yummmmmy! – ask your kids for the recipe) around our final campfire for the trip.

It’s hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end but we are looking forward to the Grand Canyon, Sedona and our finale in Scottsdale.

After we crossed the Channel Via Chunnel, we took the lift to the top of the Eiffel Tower to see the incredible view. Ben R. took
some panoramic photos while Ben L. proposed to Sam. Some of us took the lift back down to the bottom and others joined Justin and Zach L down the stairs. We made it down just in time to see the light show and take a group photo!

Day five was packed with sightseeing and fun. We started off walking the length of Champs Elysees, a major shopping street for tourists and Parisians alike and ended at the Arc de Triomphe. Adam S. posed with street performers dressed up as Egyptians and Brandon blended in well with a bunch of Abercrombie models standing in front of the most extravagant store we’ve ever seen. Next we had a tour of the Louvre and our guide pointed out all of the highlights. We saw works of art by Donatello, Michelangelo and Da Vinci including the Mona Lisa and Ben H. pointed out a few works of art he learned about in history class and thought it was really interesting to see them in person. Jason S. and Alex touched sculptures from the only section of the museum where guests are allowed to get close to the artwork. Sarah S. spotted London Piegg from “Whip It” and Amber from Parenthood in the Louvre and they let her take a picture with them! Kelly, Zack F, Carly Z, Shelby and Rachel hung out outside by the fountain and the huge pyramids. We also checked out the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral and enjoyed dinner in the Latin Quarter. Emily and Stephanie B tried escargot! We ended the night on the Bateaux Mouches (river boat) while we cruised down the River Seine and took in the sights.

Yesterday morning Madison Y, Adam S, Eric, Ben L and Amanda checked out the famous Opera House and then met up with the rest of the group at Galleries Lafayette for some exploring and lunch followed by Napoleon’s Tomb where Zack F. taught some of us some history. We then hiked Sacre Coeur and Alyssa, Bryan, Julian, Richie and Jason E. marveled at the inside of the cathedral while Tyler, Eric and Matt stood at the edge to look at the views. We then posed as “thinkers” at the Rodin Museum and Shelby, Steph B. and Sara M. were caught frolicking in the beautiful garden.

Today we drove about an hour outside Paris to Chateau Versailles where we had a guided tour through each room which is dedicated to a god or goddess. Carly F, Bari, Madison M. and Ty were spotted being photographed in the different rooms where the queen and king slept, danced and dined. Did you know Louis XIV (also known as the Sun King) changed his wig four times per
day? Ben H. described the palace as “unbelievable”. After some free time, we came back together as a group to visit the ultra-modern Pompidou Center and explore shops in the area and a delicious dinner. During dessert, we started off the night of karaoke and enjoyed Will’s rendition of I Will Survive, Jon with Crocodile Rock and David with Oh Baby Baby. After the solos we had two groups sing their hearts out. Rachel, Emily, Lisa, Jessica, Cassidy, Carly Z and Stephanie B. sang Wanna Be My Lover and Sara M, Lori, Shelby, Danielle, Stephanie P and Sara M sang 1000 Miles. Let’s not forget about Dean and Adam B’s duet of I Got You Babe and Ben F and Michael’s Duet of 1985. We enjoyed everyone else’s singing performances but there were too
many good ones to name!

This first week has flown by but it’s been a ton of fun! Tomorrow we’re on the move again. We’re all looking forward to paddle boating, cycling and whitewater rafting in Annecy!

Au revoir,

All of us on European Experience

Bonjour, Madames et Monsieurs!

Close your eyes and breathe in the sweet aromas of French bakeries that dance through the air of Paris. Envision the Eiffel tower, sparkling in the distance, while boats drift swiftly on the Seine throughout the night. The glory of Paris is ever-present, and we’ve discovered more of its magic with each passing moment.

Since arriving in France, the hustle and bustle of Paris has kept us on our feet as we climbed the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Sacré-Coeur. Lizzie was completely enchanted by the Eiffel Tower, whose beauty almost moved her to tears (happy ones, of course)! Lindsey, Stephanie and Marielle were the first to the top, while Lauren W. and Sammy Fr. chose to take the scenic route up, marveling at the view with each step.

We visited the prominent Louvre museum, where Jacob and Whitney were exceptionally curious, impressing guides and trip members with their knowledge. Later, we visited the Champs-Élysées for our first exquisite French lunch and Haley F. could not stop talking about her dessert of fresh strawberries that were as sweet as candy. Having eaten conveniently close to the Arc de Triomphe, Richard and Josh were eager to begin their ascent to the top. Zach, Michael and Max stood proudly from the highest point of the arc, taking plenty of snapshots of themselves overlooking the city of Paris.

At nightfall, we gave our feet a rest, stretching our vocal chords instead. Trip members stole the show at Karaoke, including Jesse B. and Gabe whose stage presence was electrifying. The food in Paris is impressing everyone!  We have indulged in crepes (Alexa’s new favorite food) and various other French delicacies. Alex S. has also grown quite fond of French fare, allowing new foods like chocolate croissants and baguettes to sneak their way into his heart. When Melanie tasted Ratatouille she proudly exclaimed, “this is the best Ratatouille I’ve ever eaten!” as we all laughed knowing that it was her first time trying it.

With stars presents in the night sky, we viewed Paris from a new perspective as we traveled by boat along the Seine. Jillian, Marisa and Gabby soaked up the sights as they gazed at the beautiful French architecture along the shore, while Eric waved joyfully at the locals on the various bridges and docks. Meeting Hailey Wickenheiser wasn’t so bad either…THAT’S RIGHT, FOLKS. Thanks to our superstar trip director, trip members had the opportunity of a lifetime to meet and chat with Hailey, the captain of the Women’s Canadian Olympic gold medal hockey team, the #1 women’s hockey player in the world.

Sweet Parisien dreams reinvigorated us for a new day, as we set off for Annecy and the beautiful French countryside. The view from the bus fills us with wonder and excitement, with luscious greenery providing the perfect backdrop for our travels.

A bientôt!

Bisou Bisou!

If Napoleon were alive today, he would be proud of how much we have conquered thus far. Our trip is off to an incredible start, and it is certain that the foundations for great friendships are beginning to form. If our karaoke performances are any indication, this trip will truly be one to remember. Highlights included Gil stepping up to the mic with a solo performance, a beautiful serenade for staff member Becky. Peter’s rendition of ‘Ice Ice Baby’ also makes it into the top five, while Ben’s version of Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ was a testament to his talent as a DJ (DJBK!). The evening closed with everyone on stage singing ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis at the top of their lungs! A special shout out goes to Danielle S. whose enthusiasm for singing was matched by her dancing moves!

As we got ready to depart Paris for our journey to Annecy, we were already looking back on our time here fondly. The Eiffel Tower at night is a sight to behold, both from land and from the River Seine. While we posed for pictures with the beautiful tower as our backdrop, it seemed as though David was overcome with emotion. Meanwhile, Jessie, Katie, Megan, Mimi, Lindsay, Gilly and Eliza met some Korean friends on board Les Bateau Mouches and embarked on our most recent challenge, ‘Trade Up’, trading a paper clip for a package of Korean Tea.

Our trip to Versailles was a gorgeous day, and just prior to getting a lesson on Louis XIV, we ate some of the most amazing crepes on a beautiful cobblestone street. While it seemed a little bit different, Colton’s beef filled crepe was actually quite tasty.

In addition to the artistry in Le Louvre, or the beauty of the Notre Dame Cathedral, we have also appreciated the smaller things on this trip. Brooke’s tutorial on Justin Bieber was most impressive, while the intellectual debates between Megan and Mimi have kept the bus rides rather entertaining and informative. We are all looking forward to seeing the countryside in France en route to Annecy.

Until the next installment, this is the European Escape signing off. Au revoir et a la prochaine!

Bonjour family and friends,

Greetings from Paris, France! We have had a great couple of days since we last touched base and hope everyone back home is doing well.

We “chunneled” from London to Paris and for those of you who do not know how it works, the Chunnel is a tunnel that passes through the English Channel and thus we have the name “chunnel”. As the bus settled in its own rail car on the chunnel, the group gathered for a great chunnel photo-opp. We hope you enjoyed the picture on our Westcoast Connection photo website!

We were fortunate enough to have our resident artist Cody Lit. on hand as we took on a huge endeavor of creating a not-to-scale map of our journey. Cody’s artistic skills contributed greatly to the bus’ beauty and intrigue. Dinner was enjoyable and everyone was very excited to head off to the Eiffel Tower. As we approached the Eiffel Tower, Trip Members could not hold back their excitement and photo snapping was out of control. Everyone was thrilled to see the twinkling lights come on at 11:00 – another significant photo op took place and trip members were all vying for the best shot! Being most of their first time at the tower, Trip Members had big eyes and were full of excitement. Raquel in particular enjoyed the experience and both she and Ari walked down from the second level to the very bottom!  Mitchell and Alie also had a great time and took advantage of the experience and walked down all 1700 steps from the top.

Day 6 brought us back in time to a grandiose palace built by King Louis XIV. We learned that it is called Chateau Versailles as it is located in the town of Versailles. We walked through a wonderful palace with unique rooms and a demonstration of extreme wealth. Ethan and Hannah were shocked to find out that the Chateau cost 1 billion American dollars to build. They thought it should definitely cost more. From the Chateau Versailles, the group had some free time to explore the town and enjoy authentic French cuisine. However, Joe and Jimmy were too excited for Italy and decided Italian was the route they would take. Both boys shared a delicious Margarita pizza and enjoyed it tremendously. Once everyone was full we made our way to the Georges Pompidou center and the Trip Members were given some free time to explore the famous square. It was after Georges Pompidou that we reached the famous Notre Dame Cathedral.  As we entered the grand cathedral we noticed Mass was taking place. The stained glass and high arching ceilings were impressive, giving each Trip Member a fuller understanding of the history and grandeur of this famous cathedral.

Dinner that evening in the Latin Quarter was a great experience. The Trip Members had the opportunity to split up into smaller groups and choose from a vast array of restaurants. Options such as Greek, French, Italian were among the most popular. Overall, it was an enjoyable dinner experienced by all. To end our second night in Paris, we took a scenic boat ride along the River Seine. We had the chance to travel through history and catch a glimpse of the evolution of the River Seine. We also got to see the Eiffel Tower twinkle again and this time was from the other side of the tower.

As day 7 of our trip began, we have a hard time believing we have already been here for a week! Our morning started off with a guided visit of the Louvre. As many have learned about art and art history in school, having the chance to see the famous works like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo was very exciting. Sarah mentioned that “finally getting to see all the masterpieces we studied in school was so cool”. Trip Members had the opportunity to listen to a professional tour guide and also to wander the museum at their leisure. After the museum, we headed for dinner at Cafe Rive Droite (which translates to the right side, refering to the River Seine) before a VERY exciting night of karaoke. Our first group of singers to take the stage consisted of Josh, Troy, Jack, David J. and Sascha who all performed a great version of Coldplay’s “The Scientist”. They sure were a tough act to follow but Kaela and staff member Jon took the stage as Jasmine and Aladdin and sang a touching rendition of “A Whole New World”. We all felt like we were watching the Disney movie all over again. Our resident theatre performer and trained vocalist Melissa, took on Kelly Clarkson’s challenging song “Because of You” and blew everyones’ socks off. The bar had been raised and no one was sure if they could top her performance. However, in a situation like this, the best musical artist to turn to is none other than Kaela look-a-like Britney Spears. Cody Lav. and Scott did a “passionate” rendition of “Oops I Did it Again” and were followed by another Britney favorite “Baby One More Time” by Andy, Henry, Mitchell and Sammy. Most are still trying to figure out the inspiration they fostered in order to pull off such an emotional song choice. Up next, Jimmy, sporting a beautiful grey French barret, sang “Wonderwall’ by British band Oasis along with his friends Julio and Michael and our very own Jon, yet again! Watching Jeff, Ilyssa and returning performer Troy, along with guest appearences by Jack and Brooke, we found ourselves “Crazy in Love” as they sang their hearts out. It might be a toss up as to who performed this better, Westcoast Connection Trip Members or Beyonce and Jay-Z. Bohemian Rhapsody was “a bold song choice” said Jake as Jimmy, Reid, Julio, Amanda, Cody Lit., Melissa and Val headbanged all the way through the song’s bridge. Be not alarmed, no one had whiplash! An all girls band made up of Sara, Brooke, Boone, Jordan, Kaela and Ilyssa took on an all boys band and did a “touching” performance of “Bye, Bye, Bye” by ‘NSync.  And the night came to an end with Enrique Iglasis’ “Hero” interpreted by Rive Droite’s stage veterans, Sara, Reid, Amanda, Michael, Sascha and Ilyssa. Joing them and making a truly inspirational appearance was David O. Although he did sing other songs that night, this one was definitely his most touching and sincere choice.

On the 8th day of our trip we were truly experiencing the French chic style. First we climbed up the beautiful Arc de Triomphe. The spiral staircase was challenging but worth at upon reaching the top for great views of the city and in particular the Eiffel Tower. At the top of the Arc de Triomphe we also had a great view of the ritzy, chic shopping district of the Champs Elysees. We learned that yearly rent is 1000 euros per square foot! Woah! Brad and Ryan are self proclaimed fashion experts.  Lunch at the Champs was very delicious as most of our Trip Members enjoyed a sit down meal at some of the terraces facing the beautiful and bustling street. Ilana enjoyed a delicious sandwich that was suggested by the waiter and despite a language barrier, she managed to get by with flying colors. Both Boone and Andrea enjoyed a tomato and mozzarella sandwich and a salad.

Our last visit of the day was to the famous Musee Rodin filled with Auguste Rodin’s famous works of art. We were fortunate enough to see the beautiful gardens and famous “Thinker” and “The Kiss” sculptures. Dinner in a quaint neighborhood called Montmartre was a lot of fun especially for those who took advantage of the classic styled double-decker carousel at the base of the Montmartre Cathedral.

We hope you are enjoying these updates and looking forward to sharing our next stops in Annecy and Zermatt with you soon.

Lots of love,

Trip Leader Robyn and Trip Member Alanna
