31,397?!?! Is that … how many gumballs are in the world’s largest gumball machine? How high the tallest mountain is? How many miles to travel around the world?

Guess again!

We are proud to announce that Westcoast Connection / 360° Student Travel travelers completed 31,397 HOURS of community service in 2011!

What an incredible impact the Westcoast Connection / 360° Student Travel travelers have made! From Hawaii, to Peru, to Alaska, to China and beyond, our participants have truly made a lasting impact on the communities they have worked with and learned so much in the process. Let’s take this opportunity to highlight some of the amazing projects that our trips have been involved with in the last few months…

In California groups had the opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity and build and construct alongside the families that will be moving into these homes in the future. Whether it was lending a hand with painting, caulking or hammering, our trip members didn’t hesitate to pitch in and help the community they became a part of.

Last summer on our Community Service elective on our Pre-College Enrichment program in Barcelona, 14 of our trip members worked at the Juvenile Center with children aged 5-9 years old. It was an incredible opportunity for our participants to interact with disadvantaged children to bring smiles to their faces while teaching English and practicing their Spanish.

Our summer in Costa Rica was a very special one. With Habitat for Humanity, all of our Costa Rica programs together help construct 3 houses in San Ramon. From the initial groundbreaking through the laying of foundation, floors, and putting up walls we did it all. An incredible accomplishment! We also worked with the Costa Rica Humanitarian Foundation building a brand new classroom for a school. The final group was able to hand the keys over to the teachers.

Our programs in South Africa had the unique opportunity to volunteer with the Morhotso Clinic where we spent an evening cooking a huge soup for all of the orphans and children. The next day our groups were able to play with and serve our soup to the children who were either orphaned because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic or whose parents were being treated at the Clinic.

Heading down south to the Amazon Jungle on the Ecuador & the Galapagos Community Service program, our trip members spent time clearing a soccer field for the Quicha community. We spent time with the local community playing soccer and practicing each other’s languages.

Congratulations to all our travelers who contributed to some amazing community service projects around the world. An outstanding accomplishment that works out to be 3.5 years of community service in ONE SUMMER!

One last Aloha!

Here we are on Maui for one last full day of fun and sun! For the past few days, we’ve been running around Maui, experiencing everything the island has to offer before taking off on Saturday night. On Tuesday, we had one last chance to ride the Hawaiian waves, and we travelled to the town of Kihei to have an afternoon of surfing. Janey, Jordyn, and Tyler all rode the waves like experts. Tuesday evening we drove over to Lahaina for a Ohana (family) dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, and a game of Mini Putt. The trip was offered a prize of an ice cream cone for the best score, which Jonah quickly made clear would be his. Jacob also won an ice cream by getting a hole in one on the 18th hole!

On Wednesday we made a trip up Haleakala Mountain, which is a dormant volcano and also the highest mountain on the island, to experience ziplining through the Eucalyptus trees. Molly and Sarah screamed out of excitement as they went down the last zipline which was 750 feet up and 150 feet across! That night we went into Paia to experience the amazing pizza of the Flatbread Company and also to scope out celebrities. We had heard that Owen Wilson had been spotted there the night before! Unfortunately we left without any spottings.

Yesterday, we had a snorkel cruise scheduled, which turned out to be the highlight of the week for many of us. The first stop for the cruise was a small bird island called Molokini which rises out of the water in the shape of the horseshoe or a big C. The snorkeling there was fantastic, with lots of tropical fish and colourful coral! Ethan Si., Ethan Sc., and Taylor all had an amazing time floating around watching the fish swim beneath them and taking underwater pictures. The second stop of the trip was at an island called Lana’i, 25 miles away. Snorkeling in the warm and turquoise water there made it an experience to remember. Anna and Eric both swam around for a long time loving the new perspective on sea life.

Even though the trip is coming to a close, we’re still taking in everything this beautiful island has to offer, and enjoying every moment of our time together! We’ll be sad to say goodbye, but also grateful that the trip happened!

See you all soon!

Dear parents and friends of Westcoast Connection Hawaii Community Service Trip,

The past few days have been full of new experiences and adventures. Our dinner at Lulu’s was a great preview for the fun and adventurousness we would experience the following day during our Surfing excursion on the North Shore of Oahu. During our evening meal at Lulu’s, we enjoyed a local Hawaiian band. A handful of our trip members spontaneously joined the hula dancing in the restaurant, giving us all a good laugh and great end to our night!

Our journey to our surfing destination was a scenic route along the island coast, as we saw pineapple farms and beautiful mountain ranges. All were extremely excited to be able to try this classic Hawaiian sport! Our trip members willingly took the
plunge – Alex, Tori, and Sarah hit some sweet waves within minutes of taking the board. It was great to see Lauren and Justine surprise themselves by overcoming their initial nerves and enjoy the epic ride! Jillian luckily came across a sea turtle – a memorable addition to an already gorgeous view. After our day of gnarly surf, we headed to the local hot spot for “shaved ice”, a
welcome treat after a full day of activity!

A historical and reflective morning followed as we took in Pearl Harbor. We were educated by and engaged in a feature video before heading over to the USS Arizona Memorial. Justine and Sara snapped photos constantly as the sites of the wreckage, as well as the wall of names, just had to be captured. Our trip members strolled the museums and the grounds, and concluded with a very
insightful discussion about our impressions. Haylee and Rhea shared the sense of appreciation that they have for the sacrifices that so many endured in order that we enjoy a peaceful world today.

The next two days were action-packed as we took part in service at the Boys and Girls Club of Nanakuli. Our trip members were so excited to see the friends that they had made on Friday again, and as soon as we arrived, it was obvious that the feeling was mutual! While our trip members assisted with the Club’s regular programming in the morning, they took the lead in the afternoon. Rhea, Zoe, Alexa, Haylee, Jordie, and Kaylie challenged the club members to an obstacle course, constantly changing it to keep the kids moving. On the basketball court, Marc, Alex, Noah and Sara shared some of their own athleticism while running the “Knock Out” station. It was great to see the creativity and enthusiasm that Lauren, Paige, Tori, and Elyse showed while running a cooperative games station. The kids were able to show off their creativity at Molly, Sarah, Jillian, and Justine’s arts and crafts station. After this day, our trip members had shared even more laughs with their buddies and wished that our last day was not
so soon!

We finished our time with the Boys and Girls Club with a fantastic day. The club members got to play their favorite game of “Sham Battle” with us once again. The leadership shown by our trip members was again stellar during the afternoon – Tori, Alex, Sarah, Lauren, Justine, and Sara had the kids show off their amazing dance moves with a game of Freeze Dance. Rhea, Noah, Marc, Paige, Alexa and Elyse set up musical chairs – there may not ever have been as competitive and fun a version of this simple game before! The highlight for many of the club members remained the arts and crafts station, where Molly, Haylee, Jillian, Jordie, Kaylie and Zoe treated the kids to one-on-one time and a lesson on splatter painting. Our trip members and the club members all have a wonderful memento for their time together, as they spent their last hour together making colorful and creative friendship bracelets. Many were thrilled to walk away with “BFF” bracelets, as difficult as it was to say goodbye to these new friends!

We are really looking forward to the opportunity to take on a new and unique community service project this week at Habitat for Humanity. Until then, a hui hou from Honolulu!

A story from our Hawaii Community Service Trip Director Matt.  Enjoy!

The Westcoast Blogger

So at the beginning of our trip Trip Leader Bethany started a little ongoing game within our group. We were all sitting in the hotel playing get to know you games (or something like that) when a hotel clerk came over to our group and asked for Matt L., one of the travelers. He thought he had done something wrong or had to change rooms but the hotel clerk handed him a pen with a frog on it along with a small card and said “you’ve been RAK-ed”.

He read the card which said “Perform a Random Act of Kindness for another person, either someone in your life or a stranger. Pass this card along and know that you’ve been a part of the ripple!”

The whole group had a good laugh and they couldn’t figure out why a hotel clerk had given this to them (although Bethany set it all up).

So now it was Matt’s turn to pass along the “random act of kindness”…

The program lasted for a little bit, but then it somehow this turned into a dinner celebration, where at every dinner the person with the RAK card would secretly order dessert for another TM and we’d all sing happy birthday and have a good laugh.

When we were in Kihei we had a kayak/snorkel adventure day…. We had a great time seeing sea turtles and fish. Our guide showed us a really nice house along the beach and said that this was where Clint Eastwood would vacation. I had joked around and said we should go play “Nikki Nikki 9 door” on him…. But our guide said it’s very rare that he comes here.

Soooooooo…. That night we went out to a restaurant called “Stella Blues”. When we got there we were pleasantly surprised by how nice it was and we could tell it was going to be a great night. We were having a great time. About halfway through a few of the boys called my name and motioned toward a gentleman and his family sitting in the corner about two tables away from us. The boys laughed and said “hey…he kinda looks like Clint”. As the night went on I glanced over several more times thinking…. “hmmm… that actually DOES look like Clint Eastwood”.

This caused a bit of a buzz at our table and a mad rush for the bathroom which just happened to be past Clint’s table!

Eventually the boys called over the server and asked if it was him… “Yea, of course it’s him”, replied the server. “He comes here all of the time. Do you want to meet him?” Zach was the fist to step up and volunteer! So the server brought Zach to the table and introduced him to “our boy” Clint! Zach spent abou t five minutes with Clint chatting with his wife and daughters about who we were and what we were doing in Hawaii. He also managed to get a quick photo too. When Zach came back to our table we had the great idea of RAK-ing Clint Eastwood!! So… we called the server over again and ordered dessert to Clint’s table and sent the RAK card along with it.

I think we ordered a banana split….or something similar. (Apparently this is what Clint always got. As per the recommendation from our server).

Clint Eastwoord Gets RAK-ed

We had all finished our dinner by that time and were just about to leave… Clint gave our group a smile and wave as we headed out excitedly!

“Go ahead… Make my day…” Yup… Sure did Clint!
