Greetings AmVoy #2 Parents,

Another day has come and gone, always more exciting than the last. On our way from Seattle to Oregon we traveled through the state capital of Washington, Olympia. This quaint little town had quite a farmer’s market! Sam H. and Jamie found delicious snow peas and were quite satisfied. Jeremy enjoyed his fish n’ chips and was not shy to recommend it to anyone willing to take his advice. Sam R., Jeremy, and Jason also bought this ultra spicy pepper mix to sprinkle on their food.

After we made it to the campground in Mt.Hood, an Asian themed dinner was served. The stir fry and dumplings were some of the
best any of us had ever tried. Steven, Emily K., Jamie, and Eden were the key chefs while Grant, David, and Matt M. prepared the skit to introduce dinner. Steven wore a traditional Asian garb made out of tinfoil. As some of us cooked, Emily B. wowed us with her artistic ability and made bracelets for many different people! After dinner, we played Singled Out. In this game, a contestant
sits blindfolded and members of the opposite sex are asked to answer questions. If contestant’s answers match the blindfolded person’s, they move onto the next round. The number of people eventually dwindles down to one. Some of the questions the contestants were asked include where they would choose to go on a first date, what type of cologne they prefer, and how they would celebrate Valentine’s Day. Joli finally ended up with Matt M., Andrew chose Lexi and Noah chose Ronni! We all had a lot of laughs and the game was enjoyed by all. The day came to a close with s’mores around the campfire in the evening. Freshly
roasted marshmallows is always a special treat.

Our day in Mt. Hood, Oregon was a blast! We again divided into two groups, skiers and bikers. Andrew was so excited to hit the slopes and kept saying how awesome the snow was. Erika, Jeff, and Matt M. put their endurance to the test and skied until the lift closed. Danielle, Aja, and Allie conquered the terrain park, showing off their stuff long after everyone else had gone to the chalet to enjoy some amazing hot chocolate on the famous Roosevelt balcony in the Timberline lodge. Courtney, Ethan, Sam D. and Sarah also admired the Oregon landscape while sipping hot cocoa.

Those who went biking navigated a trail through the mountains and into the forest. It ended with a beautiful picture on the top of the mountain. After skiing and mountain biking, we had some down time at the campground where Grant, Noah, Jordan and
Jeremy went swimming and took time to recharge in the hot tub and Rachael was able to get a great workout while kicking around the soccer ball. There was also an intense game of go-fish. Aja was the only one to come close to beating Raquel. The airband teams also used the afternoon to practice for their performances. As we were dancing and singing at various locations around the
campground, we got quite a few looks from the other people at the sites around us. Jason and Jeff engaged in some espionage to try and figure out what Jared and the Voyageurs were up to, but was caught each time! Dinner was delicious, complete with chicken, steak, salmon, chili, and mashed potatoes. AmVoy #2′s house of meat was officially open for business – Sarah was the star of the meal presentation, making animal noises as she had to pretend to be a chicken! Matt L. had the honor of officially presenting the meal.

After dinner was the moment we had been waiting for: the air-band finals. Jacob took home the Grammy for best individual performance. He got so into the dance, he practically fell to his knees while clutching his chest as he was pretending to profess his love during the song. Matt M. all the while was in the back on the air piano doing his best Stevie Wonder impression! A bright future in cinema, maybe! Jeremy, Jordan, Grant, Noah, Andrew, and David’s performance blew us all out of the water as
well. They were dressed all in black, lip singing to the song “How Six Songs Collide” while narrating funny moments that have happened on the trip thus far. On top of that, they wore signs of different people on the trip during their skit, pretending to be those people.

Jared & the Voyageurs tried to steal the show (this is an unbiased review of course!) but it was decided that they should stick to Whirlyball from here on out. The other groups were phenomenal as well of course, Danielle, Eden and Matt L. Demonstrated their friendly, enthusiastic personalities by rocking out to “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “Ring Around the Rosy” while arm in arm. Lexi, Sam H., Jamie and Gabi sang and danced to “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry in unison. We were wondering if they were trying to break glass with those high notes! The dance and song skills that were on display were unbelievable. Before bedtime, we enjoyed another bonfire and enjoyed spending time together. Emily K. and Matt L. were a huge help in making a Westcoast Connection first: Rice Krispy Treats! This will hopefully become a staple at Westcoast Connection campsites!

More to come from California soon!

Our westcoast family left the beautiful city of Paris to head to Annecy. We stopped for a wine tasting at a 1,000 year old vineyard. Adam S, Justin, and Emily emerged as sophisticated wine tasters. Upon returning to the bus, a game of speed dating began in which trip members spent a minute with each member of the trip.  In addition, Ben F, Sarah S,  Brandon and Danielle got to know each other and formed lasting friendships.

The next day we traveled to Annecy, a small town with breathtaking views of the French Alps.  At dinner, trip members were given uncooked meat and hot plates over a flame in which to cook their meals. While Richie, Julian, and Bryan wasted no time throwing their meats on the flame, Rachel and Carly Z preferred to season their dishes and create a masterpiece.

The fun continued when our group joined the french in the celebrating of Bastille Day. Our trip historians, Eric and Zack F, enlightened us that Bastille Day marked the beginning of the French Revolution.  Steph P, Tyler, Kelly, and Alyssa bonded while being amazed by the spectacular fireworks.

After a good night’s rest, the group had the choice between a relaxing paddle boat ride or a scenic bike around the lake. Ben R, Ben F, Ben H. and Mike were the Lance Armstrong’s of our Tour de France who led the pack on the bikes. Bari, Sara M, and Madison M were thrilled to accomplish the over 10 mile bike ride.  Meanwhile, David chose to enjoy the peaceful paddle boat ride with Will, Amanda, and Madison Y.  At night, we broke up into smaller groups in order to experience the smaller restaurants of Annecy for
dinner.  Zach L indulged in spaghetti, and Jess enjoyed the gelato so much that she insisted on one before, during, and after dinner.

We awoke early the next morning to whitewater raft with the french countryside as a backdrop.  Matt, Jason E, Adam B, and Ty clearly emerged as the valedictorians of our rafting school.  Cassidy, Lori, Lisa impressed the rafting instructors with their bravery and fortitude.  Steph B and Shelby also showed off their skills by skillfully paddling their raft through rapids, rocks, and waterfalls.

Upon returning to the hotel, we celebrated the birthday of one of our own, Jason S.  Carly F showed the most enthusiasm during the surprise party that we threw before heading to dinner.  After another great meal, trip director Rob treated us to gelato.  Dean, Alex, and Jon wasted no time choosing among the 52 flavors.

Time flied, and our group headed to Switzerland. We celebrated the birthday of Madison M while looking forward to opening bank accounts and indulging in chocolate.

Greetings AmVoy #2 Parents!

Day 12 started with a breakfast at Starbucks and Tim Hortons before we hit the road to Whistler. The ride included our morning mix, our daily Real Men of Genius commercials, 18 Wheels on a Big Rig, and some other classic sing-alongs. On the way, we stopped in Hope, British Columbia. Jeremy and Noah did explore the Hope museum which included a 163 year old tree and some other cool artifacts. At this stop, Eden also introduced all the Americans to the joys of an Aero chocolate bar.

When we arrived at the condos in Whistler (which had beautiful views of the snow capped Whistler and Blackcomb mountains), we all had a bit of time to get settled and then headed to our final flash mob practice! Believe it or not, Matt L. was a star, dancing enthusiastically even though he swore dancing was not his thing! We spent some time exploring the village before we regrouped for our theatrical debut. We went to the most crowded area in town and asked one of the local restaurants to blast Party Rock Anthem over their outdoor speakers. Ronni and Sam D. kicked everything off dancing in a large crowd like crazy people! Slowly, everyone else joined in. David and Steven brought down the house with their amazing solo that kicked off when the song changes. It was definitely a success. Check out the video on our wall (and comment and like the video!) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bJUuhY7lY0 ! After we finished the mob, another group of teenagers challenged us to a dance off. Courtney and Emily K. started dancing (and singing) to our morning song (How Far We’ve Come by Matchbox 20). We then went back to the hotel and had cake in honor of Matt M.’s birthday (chocolate, his favorite!). We also watched our mob and realized that we look pretty sweet!

Day 13 was so much fun even though we were all thoroughly disappointed that we did not get to jam to the morning mix. But, it was a forgivable offense as we walked to town in order to get our lift tickets. The whole group went up Blackcomb Mountain. After the second chair lift, we divided into two groups: skiers and non-skiers.

Summer skiing was crazy. Jeff couldn’t believe it was July and there was snow on the ground. Jordan was so excited to show off his skiing ability. Can you believe that Sam D. and Erika went skiing in halter tops?! The non-skiiers rode the Peak 2 Peak gondola to Whistler. They also rode to the 7th Heaven peak, where we learned a few facts from our bus driver, Jonny. Whistler Mountain is named after the marmut. The animal makes a loud whistling noise, hence the name Whistler. We also learned that the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, connecting Whistler and Blackcomb, breaks 3 world records. Earlier that morning, we also spotted 3 black bears from the chairlift and our driver Jonny told us that bears noses are 100 times more sensitive than humans. During the summer months, a bear’s main goal is to fill up on food so that it is ready to hibernate come September. Finally, Jonny told us a fact that has nothing to do with skiing or Whistler. He was testing our knowledge and we found out that “screeched” is the longest one syllable world. Who knew you could learn so much in a 4.5 minute bus ride! At the top of 7th Heaven, Jacob and staff Jess made snowballs together. Grant also commented that it was his first time seeing snow.

Afterwards, the majority of the group went biking. Ethan thought that it was so much fun and easy while Joli enjoyed it because she though that it was so adventurous! When we were all back at the hotel, we had some down time to shower, change and just plain relax. Some of us enjoyed the hot tub, others played Categories. Although they did not get to finish, Jordan was by far the leader when the game finished! After a great lasagna dinner coupled with mozzerella, tomato, and basil salad, mixed vegetables, and warm cookies for dessert, we ended the night with an evening bonding activity. We threw a ball of yarn from person to person, everyone complimenting the person the yarn was thrown too. Some people shared something they admired or appreciated about the catcher. Everyone holds on to the yarn and a web is formed. By the end of the activity we realized how close we’ve all become in two weeks, how many experiences we’ve shared and how much more we have to grow. In the end, we all made bracelets that we hope to wear until the last day of our trip!

We are now back in the States and will update you soon.

Dear Families,

As we headed to Annecy from Paris, the Justin Bieber-trend continued with a sing-a-long version on the bus dedicated to our Trip Director Bryan. Dinner in Annecy brought some new experiences for some of our trip members, as Colton was thrilled about shelling shrimp for the first time! The staff were quite impressed with the group as we split them into teams for an organic alphabet scavenger hunt; they had to find all the letters of the alphabet hidden on buildings, on the street, or in the natural environment. Mayra, Evan, Eliza, Megan, and Mimi were our winners!

The second day in Annecy brought many adventures as we went for a bike ride along the lake in the morning and then went whitewater rafting in the afternoon. Lauren and Annesse were both first-time rafters but loved the thrill of the experience, along with Mayra, who had quite an adventurous time in her boat. We finished the evening with our first taste of gelato before the famous gelato in Italy that we will hit up in several days!

As we all saw the shop signs “Herzlich Wilkommen”, we felt graciously welcomed in the picturesque village of Zermatt where we added German to our language options of the trip. Our first evening in Zermatt created new memories at a country restaurant that actually played pop music. Lindsay and Miranda had the chance to learn to play pool for the first time; and while David bragged of his mad pool skills, he ended in a tough battle with Bryan. Chloe and Dani M., on the other hand, got a little more creative with their billiards game, as they racked the balls into a heart-shape.

The beauty of Zermatt was readily evident the next day as we took the gondola up to the picturesque top of the famous Matterhorn mountain.  After exploring the village, well known for both chocolate and Swiss Army knives, we concluded our evening with quite the party at a local club in Zermatt. Hayley rocked out in her heels for a night out on the town and loved dancing with Valerie and the rest of our group, while Ben showed up the locals with his dance moves on the dance floor.

During our last wake-up in Zermatt as we made our way to Venice, Evan offered up of one of his favorite quotes: “Let’s do it like Brutus!”

The Northwestern Odyssey Trip checks in.

Dear families and friends!

We’ve been walking on sunshine! Since those cloudy days of Mt. Hood are long behind us, we’ve had nothing but blue skies all day. Crossing the border after our educational experience at the Laundromat (where Caroline, Erica, Jared and Lea enjoyed one of Seattle’s finest coffees), we made our way to Whistler – to our beautiful ski-in/ski-out condos (in winter that is but they are right on the mountain). Steven, Marc, Zach S, William and Michael all worked on their Canadian lingo (eh?), while Rebecca, Sydney, Hannah and Jeff all enjoyed a North-of-the-Border delicacy of Beaver Tails.

Our days at Whistler included skiing the bowl at Blackcomb in our Westcoast t-shirts, exploring the village, biking around Lost Lake and relaxing by the pool. Eric G, Eric M, Jon, Zack A, Sidney, Andrew P and Drew W kicked off our evening entertainment with a hilarious presentation of the “Week In Review” as our community shared our memories and bloopers with the rest of the group. We woke the next day to a second great morning of skiing in the sun and horseback riding in the afternoon. Our trip through the Rocky Mountain valley led to many great experiences, adventures and moments together – it seems like Jay, Harrison and Max might actually be cowboys considering the way they took to the horses and life on the trail.

After our time in Whistler, we headed south to Vancouver. The Capilano Bridge gave us a rush of excitement as we crossed its span, and Granville Island let us fill our stomachs with food from around the world. After so much adventure, an afternoon relaxing at Kitsilano (Kits) Beach was exactly what Alex, Andrew S, Danny and Hayley needed.

Who knows what lays ahead, but our group grows closer every day, our adventures become more amazing and what can only be described as “simply the best summer ever” continues.
