Queridos padres y amigos,

¡Saludos de Barcelona!

Guest trip member scribe Allie B. describes our first few days here: Hay muchos lugares muy famosos y interesantes en Barcelona.  Un lugar que me gustó mucho fue la Plaça Catalunya y la calle de La Rambla, porque hay muchas tiendas bonitas.  Me gustó ver el Museu Picasso y La Pedrera también.  El arte en el museo fue muy interesante y la arquitectura de la Pedrera fue muy bonito.  También fuimos a la escuela en la mañana por cuatro días.  Yo aprendí mucho y jugamos muchos juegos divertidos.  Barcelona es mi favorita de las ciudades que hemos visitado.

There are many famous and interesting places in Barcelona.  One place I really liked was the Plaça Catalunya and La Rambla, because there were lots of nice stores.  I also liked the Picasso Museum and La Pedrera (Gaudí’s crazy apartment building).  The art in the museum was really interesting and the architecture of La Pedrera was really pretty.  We also went to school for four days.  I learned a lot and we played many fun games, Barcelona is my favorite of the cities we’ve visited. Other highlights from this stop include:

• A guided city bike tour around the parks, beach, and Olympic Village.

• Authentic tapas for dinner.

• A guided night tour of the Gothic Quarter and tapas meal.

• Flash mobs.  Each staff group prepared one and performed it in public.  Lee’s group probably got the most attention when they performed as we disembarked the bus in Tarragona for dinner.

Queridos padres y amigos,

Nuestro fin de semana en Granada fue muy divertido.  El sábado por la mañana, exploramos la ciudad y fuimos y los mercados famosos.  Después de comer, fuimos a la Alhambra, un palacio árabe.  La architectura era muy intrincada y los jardines eran bellas.  Por la noche, pasemos por la Albaicín, un barrio histórico, con vistas muy bonitas de la ciudad.  Llegamos a las cuevas gitanas, donde vimos un espectáculo de flamenco.  Jessica, Rachel, Dani E, Danielle F, Helen, Jake H, y Brian bailaron con los profesionales.  Brian bailó mejor – ¡nadie sabía que tenía tanto talento!  A todos nos gustó esta parada en nuestro viaje.

Dear parents and friends,

Our weekend in Granada was very fun.  Saturday morning, we explored the city and went to the famous markets.  After lunch we went to the Alhambra, an Arab palace.  The architecture was very intricate and the gardens were beautiful.  At nights, we walked through the historic neighborhood of the Albaicín, which had nice views of the city.  We ended the night at the gypsy caves, where we saw a flamenco show.  Jessica, Rachel, Dani E, Danielle F, Helen, Jake H, and Brian danced with the professionals.  We were all particularly impressed by Brian’s flamenco skills; no one had known he’s such a talented dancer!  Everyone enjoyed this weekend stop during our trip through Spain.

“Me gustó ver a Berto bailando el flamenco.” (“I enjoyed watching Brian dance the flamenco.”) -Sara B.

“El espectáculo de flamenco fue interesante y entretenido, y la cueva era muy guay.” (“The flamenco show was interesting and entertaining, and the cave was really cool.”) -Rebecca S.

“Me gustó más este espectáculo de flamenco porque más de una persona bailó.  También fue más emocionado y divertido, y menos enojado.” (“I preferred this flamenco show because more than one person danced.  It was also more exciting and fun, and less angry.”) -Jake R.

Queridos padres y amigos, Guest scribe Trip Member Vikki describes (in Spanish!) our stay in Marbella.

 Desafortunadamente nosotros tuvimos que salir de la ciudad de Sevilla, pero fue un día llena de diversión también porque lleguemos en Marbella.  Marbella es bonita como las otras ciudades, pero es más moderna y las personas aquí quieren nadar, tomar el sol, y divertirse. Las playas son grandes, bonitas, y sobre todo divertidas. El lunes, nosotros nadamos y tomamos el sol por unas horas.  Durante la noche fuimos a “Mega Bowling” después de la cena.  Martes nosotros fuimos a “Funny Beach,” otra playa aquí en Marbella.  Tomamos el sol y nadamos una vez más y también montamos en un “banana boat.” La barca fue muy divertida y me gustó mucho.  El día siguiente nosotros volvimos a la primera playa y tuvimos mucho diversión.  Durante la noche fuimos a un bar de karaoke y cantamos.  El salón estaba llena de ruido y diversión.  Otra cosa muy divertida era cuando nosotros fuimos a un parque aquático. Tuvimos tiempo para disfrutar y divertirnos.  Una cosa única de 360 Student Travel es que nosotros tenemos tiempo para relajar y para aprender.  Hacemos cosas llena de información y cosas divertidas.  Nuestras clases eran interesantes también.  Aprendimos mucho sobre la lengua y la cultura de España.

Translation: Unfortunately we had to leave Seville, but it was also a fun day because we  arrived in Marbella.  Marbella is pretty like the other cities, but it’s more modern and the people there want to swim, tan, and have a good time.  The beaches are big, pretty, and most of all fun.  On Monday, we swam and tanned for a few hours.  That night we went to “Mega Bowling” after dinner.  Tuesday we went to “Funny Beach,” another beach in Marbella.  We tanned and swam again and we rode “banana boats.”  The boat was very fun and I really liked it.  The next day we returned to the first beach and had a lot of fun.  That night we went to a karaoke bar and sang.  It was really noisy, but fun.  Another fun thing we did was go to a water park.  We had time to chill and enjoy ourselves.  One thing that’s unique about 360 Student Travel is that we have time to relax and learn.  We do some very informative things and fun things, too.  Our classes were really interesting too.  We learned a lot about the language and culture of Spain.

When in Seville – Spain Language

Queridos padres y amigos,

 Guest Trip Member Mike gives a summary (in Spanish!) of what we did in Seville: “Sevilla es una buena parada del viaje.  La gente es muy interesante.  Hay mucha gente en las calles que hacen trucos.  Fuimos a la catedral y al Alcázar, un palacio que era muy intricado.  Aprendiendo el Flamenco fue muy divertido y después de la actividad nosotros fuimos a un espectáculo de Flamenco.  También pasemos en el parque María Luísa, la Plaza de España, y una discoteca.” Translation: “Seville is a great stop on the trip.  The people are really interesting.  There are a lot of people in the streets who do tricks.  We went to the cathedral and the Alcázar, a palace that was very intricate.  Learning Flamenco was really fun and after the activity we went to a Flamenco show.  We also spent time in María Luísa park, the Plaza de España, and a disco.”

On the Bullfighting Museum:• “Me gusta el museo taurino.  Quiero ir a una corrida ahora.”  (“I like the bullfighting museum.  I want to go to a bull fight now.”) -Danielle F.• “Antes de esta lección no sabía nada de la cultura de los toros, pero aprendí que los toros valientes pueden vivir” (Before this lesson I didn’t know anything about the culture of bullfighting, but I learned that the brave bulls can live.”) -Vikki   On our tour of the cathedral and the Alcázar:• “Me gusta la catedral porque era muy impresionante.” (“I liked the cathedral because it was really impressive.”) -Sarah K.• “Me gusta la visita a la Giralda.” (“I liked the visit to the Giralda [the bell tower we climbed].”  -Brian• “Seeing the tomb of Christopher Columbus was really cool.” -Samie W.• “I thought it was cool that they mixed the three religions in one building.” -Perri  

On Flamenco:• “En Sevilla, me gustan las clases de Flamenco, porque es un baile diferente de España y es parte de la cultura.” (“In Seville, I like the Flamenco classes because it’s a different dance from Spain and part of the culture.”) -Rachel• “Probamos a bailar Flamenco pero fue muy difícil.  Entonces, cuando vimos la presentación de Flamenco yo pensé que fue fantástico porque sabía que era difícil.” (“We tried to dance Flamenco but it was really hard.  Later when I saw the Flamenco show I thought it was fantastic because I understood how difficult it was.”) – Murielle• “Amo la emoción del baile de Flamenco.” (“I love the emotion of the Flamenco dancing.”) -Lisa• “I didn’t expect the dancing to be quite so intense.” -Helen• “The Flamenco dancing was amazing because you could hear her feet vibrating!” -Christi  

On our night at the discoteca:• “Me gusta la discoteca.” (“I like the disco.”) – Becca L.• “La discoteca fue muy divertida.” (“The disco was really fun.”) -Allie B.   On Sevilla in general:• “Each city gets better and better.” -Natasha• “Sevilla es llena de cultura y architectura magnifica.” (“Seville is full of culture and magnificent architecture.”) – Elana• “Es una ciudad muy bonita y antigua.” (“It’s a beautiful and old city.”) -Nicole  

Other thoughts:• On our way to Seville we passed through La Mancha and passed old windmills like the ones Don Quixote fought in the famous Cervantes novel.  • One evening we had a mysterious ceremony during which all the students received “Spanish” names.• Everyone enjoyed some downtime in between sight-seeing.  Kath and Annie commented, “Nos gustó la piscina.  Tomamos el sol y escuchamos música.” (“We liked the pool.  We tanned and listened to music.”• The trip members are enjoying using Spanish and are really getting quite good at communicating.  “I think it’s fun to talk to random strangers, particularly little kids,” Marlee has said.  “It’s a really great way to practice.”

¡Hola padres y amigos!

Guest scribe Meredith writes (in Spanish!) about the
rest of our stay in Madrid.

 Nosotros pasamos la primera semana del viaje en Madrid.  En Madrid,
nosotros empezamos las clases de español.  También nosotros vimos el Palacio
Real, fuimos a Toledo por un día, y fuimos a los museos de arte, El Prado y
La Reina Sofía.  Nos gustaron los deportes de invierno en Xanadú y escuchar
a la música de ópera en un restaurante.  La semana en Madrid fue muy
divertida y aprendimos mucho de la historia de España.

 Translation: We spent the first week of the trip in Madrid.  In Madrid, we
started our Spanish clases.  We also went to the Royal Palace, we went to
Toledo one day, and we went to the art museums, The Prado and The Queen
Sofia.  We enjoyed winter sports at Xanadú and listened to opera music in a
restaurant.  The week in Madrid was very fun and we learned a lot about the
history of Spain.

On indoor skiing, snowboarding, and tubing at Xanadú: • “Fue muy divertido.”  (“It was fun.”)  -Jake R.

• “Tubing fue muy rápido y divertido.  ¡Muy guay!”  (“Tubing was

 On the art museums:• “I normally don’t like art museums, but I liked these.  They had a lot of interesting and
unique paintings.”  -Josh

• “Yo he querido ver Las Meninas, y cuando lo vi yo
estaba muy emocionada.”  (“I have wanted to see Las Meninas (by Velázquez),
and when I saw it I was very excited.”) -Nicole.

• “Me gusta El Prado.”  (“I like The Prado.”) -Allie B.• “Me encanta el Museo del Prado. 

 Yo vi El Tres de Mayo (un cuadro de arte de Goya).  En la clase de español yo estudié El
Tres de Mayo y yo hice un proyecto de Goya y su arte.” (“I loved the Prado
Museum.  I saw The Third of May (a painting by Goya).  In Spanish class I
studied The Third of May and did a project on Goya and his art.” -Allison•
“I thought the modern art museum was better than the Prado.  I liked
Guernica (by Picasso).  There was a lot of profound stuff and it wasn’t as
conventional as the Prado.”  -Steven•

“My favorite spot was the Reina Sofía.  I really liked the contemporary art we saw there.” -Brian

• “Since I knew a lot about [Joan Miró] and understood his paintings, it was completely
different experience being able to see the art in-person.” -Mike, after
seeing works by an artist he studied in school.
 
On row-boating in El Parque de Buen Retiro, Madrid’s Central Park:• “A mi me
gustan las barcas.” (I like the row boats.) -Perri•

“Me gusta el lago y el parque de Madrid.” (“I like the lake and park of Madrid.”) – Natasha•

“Me gusta remar el barco aunque nosotros fuimos en circulos.” (“I liked rowing
the boats even though we went in circles.”) -Annie

 
On classes:• “Yo no sabía como las clases aquí fueron a ser, pero ahora
puedo decir que me gustan las clases.  Son diferentes de clases en mi
escuela y nosotros hablamos mucho en español.  Cada profesor es amable y
ellos no ayudan mucho.  Me gustaría aprender más español durante mi viaje y
trabajará para aprender el idioma.” (“I didn’t know what clases would be
like, but now I can say that I like the classes.  They are different from
classes in school and we talk a lot in Spanish.  Each teacher is sweet and
they help us a lot.  I would like to learn more Spanish during my trip and I
will work hard to learn the language.”) -Vikki

 
On food:• “Fuimos a un restaurante español.  La comida estaba muy buena.”
(“We went to a Spanish restaurant.  The food was really good.”) -Danielle
F.• “Me encantó el restaurante de La Favorita porque había canciones de
ópera.” (“I loved the restaurant La Favorita because there were opera
songs.” -Helen

Other thoughts on Madrid and the trip:• “Me gusta que podemos practicar
nuestro español con nativos en restaurantes, hoteles, y tiendas porque así
es la mejor manera para aprender.”  (“I like how we are able to practice our
Spanish with locals in the restaurants, hotels, and stores because that is
the best way to learn.”) -Lisa• “La arquitectura es muy bonita y me encanta
que la ciudad es vieja y muestra la historia.”  (“The architecture is pretty
and I love that the city is old and shows history.”) -Alex• “Me gustaron
mucho la historia y todas las cosas que podíamos hacer en Madrid, como
esquiar y caminar en la ciudad.”  (“I really liked the history and all the
things that we were able to do in Madrid, like ski and walk around the
city.”) -Andy• “We were able to see a lot of things, explore the town, and
get a great feeling for the city.” -Rebecca S. • “Me gusta caminar por la
ciudad con mis amigos.” (“I love walking around the city with my friends.”)
-Becca L.• “Madrid was really fun.” -Lauren• “I’m having a good time.” -Joe
 

Additional Highlights:• We celebrated Shani’s Sweet Sixteen on the Fourth
of July.  She got a Spain hat, fan, and bracelet, and everyone signed a
card.  That evening the restaurant made her a surprise birthday cake and we
all sang the birthday song in English and then in Spanish.  She described
her birthday as “muy bueno”  (“very good”).• We all sang the Star-spangled
banner together on the Fourth of July.•

 After the opera singers finished performing at the restaurant, La Favorita, Elana gave a beautiful
performance of “For Good,” from the show Wicked.• Trip members
interviewed local Spaniards in Puerta del Sol.  They asked them questions
(in Spanish!) like, “In which state is New York City?” and “Who is the King
of the United States?”  Some of the answers were pretty funny!
