The Market Theater Gum Wall is a landmark in downtown Seattle. The wall is located in Post Alley underneath Pike Place Market. It is 15 feet high, 50 feet wide and is covered in multi-colored gum (many pieces in creative designs). Named the 2nd “germiest” tourist attractions by CNN in 2009 (after the Blarney Stone), it is a must see on our Active Teen Tours that visit Seattle!

The sticking began in 1993 when people waiting to get into the theater would stick their gum to the wall – many attaching coins to their gum. The theater scraped the gum twice … then gave up. In 1999, the wall was declared an official tourist attraction (check out the wall’s Facebook page here). The Gum Wall was featured in Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston and believe it or not is a very popular site for wedding photographers.

There are no “rules” for sticking, so leave your mark on the wall on our Adventurer, American Voyageur or Northwestern Odyssey this summer. If you’re feeling creative, make a design too. If the movement grows, this could become the #1 attraction in Seattle by next summer.

Dear Parents,

It feels like only a handful of days ago since we met the group of participants that would make up our trip family and wrote about our first few days of adventure. Sadly the reality is that it has actually been more than three weeks and the goodbyes to one another have been imminent. We’ve been to three major cities, three national parks, and a whole collection of places in between but most importantly, we’ve all made many new friends in the process. This could not have been clearer last night when we took a few moments to share our highlights of the trip with one another and almost all of our memories involved a special moment with somebody else on the trip.

Many of these memories have happened in this last leg of the trip. The past couple days have been just as successful as the first between the exceptional weather, tons of quality bonding time and the last few activities. It’s hard to decide which was better; rafting the incredible Snake River, playing the pen exchange game in Jackson, the beauty of Montana or spending the entire last night together wishing the trip would never end. All these experiences were equally memorable in their own ways and will be with all of us for years to come when thinking about summer 2011.

Over the last 25 days we have come to know each and every one of your teens and can honestly say we’ve enjoyed our time with all of them. Countless people along the way from bus drivers to ski instructors have complemented our group’s courteousness, energy level and temperament and we couldn’t agree more. We are grateful for the trip we’ve had and are happy that you shared your kids with us! We hope you enjoyed the scribe updates, the pictures and your own vacation as much as we enjoyed doing our part to make them happen!

Have a wonderful end of the summer and for the last time, goodbye.

Dear Parents,

What can you say when your summer comes to an end? Sure, there are a few more weeks until school starts, and some of us may be off to Lacrosse camps, Football Camps, Band Camps, Equestrian Camps or vacations with our families; but with the end of the Northwestern Odyssey, one of the highlights of our summer is coming to an end. We’ve missed our families and friends back home, but in the mean time we’ve made new friends, become a family and had the chance to grow and take on new challenges, adventures and skills.

Since we last spoke, we’ve had some fun things to talk about. Our big adventure for Jackson Hole was a whitewater rafting trip down the Snake River. The water was fast and cool, so our ride was a blast! Our river guides expertly navigated us over the rapids and around the bends – some of us chose to overcome our fears of the cold and jump right in on at a calmer point of the river so Caroline, Lea, Erica, Marc, Alex, Spencer, and Haley took the first plunges.  All in all the raft trip goes down as one of the top activities of the trip.

After a nice little movie night in the condos, we were off to bed getting ready to depart on to our next (and final) destination. The drive to Park City was bitter sweet. We were excited for the events that this former Olympic site held, but all of us could sense that our time together really was coming to an end. No more “Dog Days” in the morning, programming during the day, and nights in tents or hotels chatting it up with our friends. We checked in and immediately began to enjoy the pool; it was to no one’s surprise that Jay, Spencer and Danny were in the water first…these three have probably enjoyed more pool time than anyone else on tour. Rebecca got help from Sydney in wrapping and packaging up her numerous snow globes (a regular question for every stop was, “can I get a snow globe here?”) while some of us lounged around the pool deck. After dinner we hit Main Street and enjoyed an ice cream. The experience blew Jeff’s mind as he’s never experienced this town without snow.

On our last full day we made our way to the mountain to have a ride on the Alpine Coaster and Zip Rider. Almost everyone was up for the challenge of the long slide down the side of the mountain, resting securely in our harnesses, Eric G. overcame his fear and went for a screaming ride all the way down. Hannah was a little concerned but with the support of her Trip Leader Mariel she did it too! Following that we tried our hand at Alpine Coastering. Doubling up on the carriages we enjoyed a long, lazy ride to the top, only to round the bend and go zooming back down again. We explored Main Street one last time and returned to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon of time in the pool, packing and getting ready for this evening`s banquet. The food was great, the sodas were cold and the music was loud, could we ask for a better party to celebrate the time we had together? One thing that we all agreed on as the last song of the night played is that we had simply the best summer ever!

Thank you Northwestern Odyssey; without Zach A., Spencer, Steven, Adam C., Tucker, Alex, Caroline, Drew G., Ali, Eric G., Jay, Max, William (Bill), Haley, Erica, Rebecca, Zachary L., Jared, Sidney, Harrison, Michael (Ron), Eric M., Alexa, Andrew P., Zach P., Zac P., Adam P., Jon, Jeffery, Hannah, Lea, Andrew S., Zachary S., Andrew T., Ty, Sydney, SJ, Danny, Drew and Marc this summer would have not been the same. Thanks for simply the best summer ever!

Dear Families,

Just a quick note to let you know what we’ve been up to.  This week was a special one for a trip member of ours and so we would like to start right off the bat by wishing Hannah a happy birthday! It was a blast celebrating it on our ride to Montana on our decorated party bus. After the last Tim Horton’s coffee shop visit on the way down, we have now completed all the Canadian stops on our 25 day voyage.

Our stay in Calgary flew by so fast that some of us are still wearing our cowboy hats. It started off with the Calgary Stampede, an extravagant western fair and rodeo that was a cultural experience for all. Megan and Jordan fit right in with their cow boy and cow girl out fits!

The city’s Western flair is not its only claim to fame. Calgary has also been on the radar for hosting the winter Olympics. Our second day’s itinerary included a visit and bobsled ride at Canada Olympic park. Colin, Liam, Gabby and Avril managed to cut through the course with the best time and highest top speed of around 50 miles per hour. We would like to thank our two time Olympic driver from Brazil who helped pilot the sled and guide them and the rest of us safely down the track!  After a hearty feast at the University of Calgary’s residence hall, we witnessed the red team (Brittany, Jack, Eric, Federico, Hannah, Morgan and Avril) destroy the competition in a much anticipated game of laser tag. Before we knew it the night was over and with it so was the stay in our third city.

The next day we travelled to our last campsite in Glacier National Park, Montana to find that between the pool, hot tub and mountains in every direction, the last camp site of the trip was definitely the best. What a perfect location to start the final and most epic of our team competitions – extending the Olympic theme, we had our own competition! Our two groups have been determined and although the White team dominated the traditional capture the flag, watermelon eating and bus dance off competitions, there will still be opportunities for the opposition to catch up!

In between the friendly rivalry, we have enjoyed a stunning boat ride and then hike to the magnificent St. Mary’s waterfall near the glacier for which the park was named. The walk there was challenging but the views were certainly worth it.

We are now back on the road going through another spectacular National Park while listening to tunes by DJ’s Matt, Russel, Charlie, Alex and Noah. It has only been an hour and we have already spotted an eagle, elk, and deer. Next stop: Jackson, Wyoming for some white water rafting.

It is now the home stretch of the trip and we look forward to ending the last couple days on a high note!

We’ll write again before the trip is through and look forward to seeing you all soon!

Dear Families,

Wow, after the Stampede could our days in Calgary get any better? Well, it seems like they did, because we found ourselves at the top of the track, ready to shoot down the slope, in the coolest summer experience yet: Summer Bobsled at Canada Olympic Park. Now, this wasn’t a simple simulation, no, this was getting ourselves strapped into a bobsled on wheels, and having a professional bobsled driver, guide us safely down the track. And who was the one that pushed Erica, Alexa and Ali (as well as Gavin who may have added just a little more weight) to the longest standing fastest time on the track? None other than Calgary’s own, Pierre Lueders. Now, this name may not mean much to most of us, but our driver has quite the resume: 10 gold medals in national and international events, 2 world cups and 1 Olympic Gold (in 1998 in Nagano, and a silver in 2006 in Turin).  WOW!!

After that thrilling run down the mountain side, we relaxed at the aquatic centre and lavished in the wave pool of the Trico Centre.  Eric G, Eric M, Andrew P and Jon really seemed to enjoy the facilities where they had a chance to have a swim and a float. This afternoon excursion let us relax, blow off some steam and get ready to say good-bye to Canada, as we were to head back to the United States the next morning.

Our drive south of the border brought us into Big Sky Country where we set up our last campsite on the outskirts of Glacier National Park in St. Mary’s, Montana. Now, Montana’s big skies have a lot more to them than just cloudless skies they also bring with them beautiful sunsets! Jeff, Zachary L, Tucker, Ty and Harrison took to their tents pretty quickly and set up some of the most secure tents we had seen (a little later they would be tested and they would pass!). After the tents were up and secured, we began with a little trip competition; Haley, Jared and Sydney led the Music team and William, Sidney and Erica captained the Sports team, the challenges were goofy, they were technical and they were a whole lot of fun! Alexa and Erica wrote a great camp song celebrating our tour, while Jared played guitar and Zack A presented their tune to lift our spirits and remind us of the great times we’ve had so far. Next up was the Battle of the Airbands – Alex was our most enthusiastic performer and along with Spencer, Hannah, Jay, Steven and William his band rocked out to U2. Adam P, Andrew T, Michael, Lea and Sydney “serenaded” Caroline with their Airband rendition of Neil Diamonds, “Sweet Caroline”. Really, they were all so good it was too hard to pick a winner that night.  The rest would have to wait until tomorrow.

Our trip to Glacier National Park started with a great boat cruise along the Glacier Lake where we first encountered the Continental Divide (the first of many times) as we prepared for a great 3 mile hike to St. Mary’s Falls. Although the hike was great, and the falls were wonderful, it was the return that was best for some of us. Andrew S, Zach Po, Zach Pe, Mike (in his trade marked skinny jeans), SJ and more enjoyed the challenge of being led on a trail run with counsellors Brian, Jaimie and Ethan. Nature at top speed can still be enjoyed!

Adam C, Rebecca, Marc and others took to the court the next morning for a soccer competition to really see which team would be the Northwestern Odyssey champion. In the end, between Drew W’s manoeuvrability in through the Spider Web station or Danny’s skills in the blindfolded assisted obstacle course, the winning team was….(drum roll)…Sports! It was all in good fun and enjoyed by the whole group.

From there we headed over to Bozeman, Montana.  After watching either Harry Potter or Transformers 3 at a local theatre we went to our dorms where we spent the night before setting out today for Yellowstone National Park. The day was cloudless and the sun was bright as we awaited the eruption of Old Faithful. Zack S became our guide as he shared his knowledge of the process while Drew G awaited the natural phenomenon that we had travelled so far to see.

Here we are now, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming – our days on the trip are getting fewer and fewer so these times that we’ve got left are getting even more special than before. Whitewater rafting is on the list tomorrow and a chance to spend more time together as we get ready to head out to Park City for our final days on this amazing tour.

We hope summer is treating all of you well at home and everyone is excited to see you soon (though sad that it is so soon!!)

Sincerely,

The Odyssey crew
