31,397?!?! Is that … how many gumballs are in the world’s largest gumball machine? How high the tallest mountain is? How many miles to travel around the world?

Guess again!

We are proud to announce that Westcoast Connection / 360° Student Travel travelers completed 31,397 HOURS of community service in 2011!

What an incredible impact the Westcoast Connection / 360° Student Travel travelers have made! From Hawaii, to Peru, to Alaska, to China and beyond, our participants have truly made a lasting impact on the communities they have worked with and learned so much in the process. Let’s take this opportunity to highlight some of the amazing projects that our trips have been involved with in the last few months…

In California groups had the opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity and build and construct alongside the families that will be moving into these homes in the future. Whether it was lending a hand with painting, caulking or hammering, our trip members didn’t hesitate to pitch in and help the community they became a part of.

Last summer on our Community Service elective on our Pre-College Enrichment program in Barcelona, 14 of our trip members worked at the Juvenile Center with children aged 5-9 years old. It was an incredible opportunity for our participants to interact with disadvantaged children to bring smiles to their faces while teaching English and practicing their Spanish.

Our summer in Costa Rica was a very special one. With Habitat for Humanity, all of our Costa Rica programs together help construct 3 houses in San Ramon. From the initial groundbreaking through the laying of foundation, floors, and putting up walls we did it all. An incredible accomplishment! We also worked with the Costa Rica Humanitarian Foundation building a brand new classroom for a school. The final group was able to hand the keys over to the teachers.

Our programs in South Africa had the unique opportunity to volunteer with the Morhotso Clinic where we spent an evening cooking a huge soup for all of the orphans and children. The next day our groups were able to play with and serve our soup to the children who were either orphaned because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic or whose parents were being treated at the Clinic.

Heading down south to the Amazon Jungle on the Ecuador & the Galapagos Community Service program, our trip members spent time clearing a soccer field for the Quicha community. We spent time with the local community playing soccer and practicing each other’s languages.

Congratulations to all our travelers who contributed to some amazing community service projects around the world. An outstanding accomplishment that works out to be 3.5 years of community service in ONE SUMMER!

Hello Again California Community Service Group!

Our last week in California is almost over, but we are still going strong! On Wednesday, our group spent our second day at the Habitat for Humanity build site, where we resumed painting the exterior of the homes, and some of our group got to help put siding up on the homes – very cool. That evening, we headed out to UltraZone laser tag, where Danny and Brandon kept beating us all! We stopped for ice cream on the way home, and burst into song when Lean on Me came on the radio in the vans! On Thursday, we went to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore to assist them with cleaning and organizing their inventory. ReStore takes donations of quality home items (ie. furniture, paint, etc.) and sells them to the public, with all the proceeds helping build more Habitat homes. It was great for us to experience another aspect of their incredible organization.

Friday was by far one of the best days of the trip. We headed out to Moonlight Beach for our first surf lesson. Adam D. said it was one of the coolest things he had ever done, and Meri, Matthew and Danny said they can’t wait to get home to buy surfboards of their own. The most incredible thing happened – as our group was riding the waves  – a group of dolphins appeared and were riding alongside us. They were within arms reach!!!! It was unbelievable!! The surf staff said they have never seen the dolphins come close to a group like that before! We spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach (still excited about our dolphin sighting!) and then went ice skating that evening.

On Saturday, our group returned to the Habitat Build Site and ReStore for our final day of community service. We worked hard and felt really good about the work we had accomplished there. That evening, we drove to Seaport Village, a cute little town outside of San Diego. We also got to catch a glimpse of the crowds from Comic Con (an international conference for comic book enthusiasts) as we drove through the downtown
core – it was fascinating seeing all the vendors and people dressed up in elaborate costumes!

Sunday was our second surf lesson, and our group are basically pro surfers now! We stayed at the beach to relax for the afternoon, and before dinner, we drove up Mount Soleded to take in a gorgeous view of the city. There are just three more days to go on our adventure, and while we are sad that the end is near, we are so grateful for every minute we have spent together.

Dear California Community Service Parents and Families,

WOW! It’s hard to believe that this will be the final update of the summer. Our time here has flown by and it has most definitely been a very memorable summer. This week a lot of exciting events have happened!

On Monday, we started the week with Venice Beach, which all of the trip members were excited to see. It was a perfect beach day. After getting back we headed out to famous & fabulous Hollywood! We saw the Hollywood sign, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and all of the handprints of the stars outside the Mann’s Chinese Theater.

Tuesday was our first day at the Boys & Girls Club. We divided the group into teams of four people. Each group was put with a different age group, which they would spend the next three days working with. Katherine, Lindsay and Tucker were put with the 7-8 year olds, Sydney, Michaela and Aaron were with the 9-10 year olds, Michelle, Ally and Niki were with the 11 year olds and Lauren, Valerie and Josh were with the 12 year olds. Everyone made such amazing connections with the kids. We really saw these connections after our final day as we said goodbye to the kids and all were sad to see us go. It was truly touching and I think this service project made a big impact on each of the trip members.

We woke up on Wednesday morning to head back to the Boys & Girls Club. Once again it was Aaron and Michaela climbing through the jungle gym in the playground tagging 9 and 10 year olds in an intense game of freeze tag.  Josh made a close connection with a kid through a card game, while Valerie and Lauren dominated at ping-pong.  Wednesday night, Lindsay was thrilled to see the final Harry Potter with her new friends on the trip.

On Thursday, we had an emotional last day at the Boys & Girls Club.  Our day started off the same as the previous two, with all our members spending the day with the kids, but ended differently because it was the last time we would see our new friends.  Katherine and Sydney had trouble trying to saying goodbye to some of the kids they had made a particularly close connection with. Tucker taught a kid how to play ping-pong the right way and Niki, Michelle and Ally played soccer with the 11 year olds.

Thursday night was a night filled with laughs as we went to the world famous Hollywood Improv.  Our whole group were the stars of the show. We had an awesome time there seeing some well-known comedians perform. Also a special treat was that one of the comedians was actually a Westcoast Connection alumni. He told us that he did a teen tour back in 1989! He told us to follow our dreams and that one-day we could make it in Hollywood, just as he had.

On Friday, we went back to the Orange County Rescue Mission where we received a more detailed tour and then split up to supermarkets to collect food for the mission.  Although we tried being competitive, the real winners were the recipients of the about 75 bags of groceries we collected.  It was inspiring to see so many people donate and a great end to our community service work. Friday night it was time for some baseball! The Dodgers played the Nationals in what was a good game until the 9th inning when the Nationals hit a grand slam to put the game away.

On Saturday we went to Raging Waters, California’s biggest water park. They had some great rides. After our last dinner at UCLA we went back to Westwood Village one last time for some souvenir shopping and of course one last visit to Diddy Riese. Tomorrow, our final day will be spent at Universal. We are excited but sad that the summer is coming to a close. The time really flew by! As a final discussion we spoke about some meaningful experiences we had this summer. As counselors, we spoke of how we were inspired by the big hearts and good work of your children. They really made a difference in so many people’s lives this summer!

Thank you for sharing them with us!

Hello families!

Though you are enjoying having your son/daughter home, we wanted to send you an update from the last part of their trip:
We have spent the past 4 days at the Boys and Girls Club and instead of me writing about it I thought hearing from one of our own trip members might give you all a better idea about the experience we’re getting here. Jackee has enjoyed all of our community service but she has especially taken to this last project. This is her perspective:
My time at the Boys & Girls Club has been an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience.  From the minute I stepped foot onto the facility, I was amazed by the positive atmosphere created. The kids were happy, fun-loving, and became attached to me very quickly. By the second day I had three little girls hanging on to me by the arms, dragging me wherever they went. Many of them taught me how to dance, showed me around the club, and told me all about themselves. I helped a big group of the kids every day to do gymnastics and tap dance. I watched as they learned how to do magic tricks, make publisher documents, and interact with each other. My time with these kids became some of the happiest and most fun times I’ve had on this trip in its entirety.
Through spending some time with a few kids and getting to know them, though, I began to realize that these kids had been through a terrible amount of hardship. There were moments, when one of the children would explain to me what they had experienced, became the reasons I was able to understand how important our service there was. The Boys & Girls Club is a place where these kids can come to just be the fun-loving people they are, and forget about whatever it is that they’ve been through in their life.  Being there gave us an opportunity to be the positive role models that shape these kids’ lives while having fun in a safe place. This gave me a great sense of satisfaction after our last day today. But this also made it incredibly hard to leave these kids after four days,  they had wrapped their arms around me so tight that it became hard to breathe. Leaving today has inspired me to look into volunteering long-term at a Boys & Girls Club local to me…
Everyone seemed to love spending time with the kids. They certainly appreciated having us there and needed the extra hands with over 300 children under the age of 13. Sam, Emma, Julian were in the 7-8 year old group, Jackee, Molly, Eric, Spencer, and Olivia played with the 9-10 year olds, Jeremy, Rebecca, Sydney, and Francesca got to know the 11 year olds, and Lisa, Lexy, Joanna, and Nina hung out with the 12 year olds.
The 12 year olds taught Lisa new games such as gutterball and speed. Joanna was taught some moves. Emma was constantly hugged by many of the girls in her group fighting for her attention, Jeremy bonded with a girl named Anthea. Rebecca could be often found in conversation with many girls by the playground.  Sam was always surrounded by a slew of 8 year olds. It was such a rewarding experience for us all.
While we may have been busy, we’ve also found time to enjoy the sights of Los Angeles too. We’ve explored Hollywood Boulevard where Nina found her favorite actor, Hugh Jackman’s, star. We also discovered that Jon and Nina’s top man are hand twins. His hands fit perfectly into Hugh Jackman’s handprints!
The Improv show was hilarious and the lineup was filled with up and coming comedians from tv shows such as “Raising Hope,” MTV, and Comedy Central. Spencer was even called up on stage! We all cheered him on as the comedian gave him lessons on public speaking.
With our last community service project finished we are looking forward to some fun in the sun and Universal Studios.
Til next time!

Dear Parents and Families,

Greetings from Los Angeles! Our final couple days in San Diego were packed, as we went to the famous San Diego Zoo, played competitive Laser Tag and wrapped up with a final day at the Habitat build site followed by dinner at a restaurant called Islands. The San Diego Zoo was awesome and a good time was had by all. Lindsay and Sydney got their faces painted while Ally got our trip mascot’s face painted! Each day a person on the trip gets the mascot and has to add something to it representing that day. That night we headed to play some games of Laser Tag. The trip members got really into it and we divided up in to two teams, the yellow team and the blue team. It was close but the yellow team prevailed, with very high scores from Tucker and Aaron.

The next day was both our final day in San Diego and our final day at the Habitat build site. By the time we left the whole outside of the house and a lot of the bedrooms inside were primed and ready to be painted. It was a huge accomplishment and everyone was proud by the work that they put into contributing to this house.

It was then off to LA! We stopped for lunch at the famous and beautiful San Clemente Pier. After that we continued on our way and arrived at UCLA! Our living situation here is amazing. Each dorm room has its own bathroom and they make our beds every day. We have tried to explain to the group that this is not how college REALLY is, but it is definitely nice to be spoiled right now. Once settled in, we went out to Westwood Village, which is walking distance from campus and explored this quaint village. The trip members were definitely excited about that!

We then had our first day of service at the Orange County Rescue mission. For the first two hours we helped pick out weeds. In just two hours you could see what a huge difference that we made. The next part of the day was spent setting up a sundae station in the cafeteria for the residents and their kids. Michaela, Michelle and Katherine were great ice cream scoopers! Everyone pitched in helping with the spoons, the cones, the bowls and of course all of the wonderful toppings. It was an awesome experience. Everyone was so thankful for what we did and did not stop telling us for the remainder of the day. It is true that a little deed can go a long way.

Saturday was spent relaxing and exploring the UCLA campus. After a relaxing morning we headed to one of the many outdoors pools that the campus has. We spent the day there and then went to an awesome buffet called Souplantation for a delicious dinner. When we got back from dinner we did some evening programming in the dorms. One of the games we played was called, “Hunny I Love You.” The point of the game is for the person in the middle to get the people in the circle to laugh by approaching them one at a time and saying, “Hunny I love you, would you smile for me?” The other person has to respond without laughing and say, “Hunny I love you but I just can’t smile for you.” Niki and Valerie were able to keep stone cold faces and would not laugh during the game, while Josh couldn’t keep but laughing every time he was approached. The game was very fun to play!

Sunday was a moving day for our group and of course Lauren’s birthday! Happy Birthday Lauren! We had a private tour of the Museum of Tolerance. We got to listen to a Holocaust survivor speak as well as former White Supremacist skinhead. We also saw some amazing and inspiring exhibits. I think everyone was moved by the experience. We then headed to Santa Monica Pier, which is definitely a sight to see in California. There are some amazing views and we got to get an even better one when we took a group ride on the Ferris Wheel. We then came back to the dorms and celebrated Lauren’s birthday, which somehow ended in all of the trip members having cake on their faces!!

It is now on to our final week! We cannot believe in just one week we will be saying our goodbyes and headed for home. But until then we have a fun and action packed week ahead!

That is all for now!
