31,397?!?! Is that
how many gumballs are in the world’s largest gumball machine? How high the tallest mountain is? How many miles to travel around the world?

Guess again!

We are proud to announce that Westcoast Connection / 360° Student Travel travelers completed 31,397 HOURS of community service in 2011!

What an incredible impact the Westcoast Connection / 360° Student Travel travelers have made! From Hawaii, to Peru, to Alaska, to China and beyond, our participants have truly made a lasting impact on the communities they have worked with and learned so much in the process. Let’s take this opportunity to highlight some of the amazing projects that our trips have been involved with in the last few months…

In California groups had the opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity and build and construct alongside the families that will be moving into these homes in the future. Whether it was lending a hand with painting, caulking or hammering, our trip members didn’t hesitate to pitch in and help the community they became a part of.

Last summer on our Community Service elective on our Pre-College Enrichment program in Barcelona, 14 of our trip members worked at the Juvenile Center with children aged 5-9 years old. It was an incredible opportunity for our participants to interact with disadvantaged children to bring smiles to their faces while teaching English and practicing their Spanish.

Our summer in Costa Rica was a very special one. With Habitat for Humanity, all of our Costa Rica programs together help construct 3 houses in San Ramon. From the initial groundbreaking through the laying of foundation, floors, and putting up walls we did it all. An incredible accomplishment! We also worked with the Costa Rica Humanitarian Foundation building a brand new classroom for a school. The final group was able to hand the keys over to the teachers.

Our programs in South Africa had the unique opportunity to volunteer with the Morhotso Clinic where we spent an evening cooking a huge soup for all of the orphans and children. The next day our groups were able to play with and serve our soup to the children who were either orphaned because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic or whose parents were being treated at the Clinic.

Heading down south to the Amazon Jungle on the Ecuador & the Galapagos Community Service program, our trip members spent time clearing a soccer field for the Quicha community. We spent time with the local community playing soccer and practicing each other’s languages.

Congratulations to all our travelers who contributed to some amazing community service projects around the world. An outstanding accomplishment that works out to be 3.5 years of community service in ONE SUMMER!

Hola Padres,

Let us get you up-to-date on the past few days! They have been filled with adventure, laughter and all-around great times. Our cozy group has been soaking up the sun beachside and poolside (with plenty of sun block of course), working out, checking out the latest Harry Potter flick, and attending our final Spanish and elective classes.   In recognition of their great work over the last three weeks, we had a celebration “graduation” lunch at a yummy Italian restaurant on Las Ramblas.

Once back at the residence, we packed our things and got ready to say goodbye to Barcelona and “Hola” to Sitges, a stunning beach town where we will finish off our trip with relaxation and well-deserved rest.  We arrived on Sunday and once we set our bags down in our hotel, we were off to Port Aventura amusement park (comparable to a Six Flags in the United States).  After taming the fastest and most thrilling roller coasters in the park (and the bumper cars in the case of Becca, Rebecca, and Jesse) we headed to the park’s various ethnic themed restaurants for dinner.   Morgan, Nora, and Brittany tried out exotic American hamburgers and listened to “real American music” at the Western Rodeo Restaurant, while Andrew and Ahmed warmed up the audience at the Hacienda Mexican Restaurant with an on-stage dance prior to the arrival of the scheduled theme park performers.  When we finished dinner, we listened to stunning vocal performances by Mosoma and Mollie prior to the start of the theme park’s firework spectacular.

This morning we woke up and enjoyed an amazing breakfast at the hotel complete with 9 different kinds of cheese, 8 types of fruit, and a make-your-own-omelet station.  With our stomachs filled and our bodies covered in sunscreen we headed to a beautiful beach where we spent time taking in the sun, playing volleyball, and playing in the Mediterranean Sea.  Later, we headed to the city center at sunset to have dinner at restaurants overlooking the water and spent the rest of the evening at clubs playing everything from Lady Gaga to Reggaeton.  When we got back to the hotel it was time to go to bed and get ready for our final day in Spain.

When we wake up tomorrow we will be heading back to the beach and the pool to take advantage of the bright Mediterranean sun one last time before heading out to our banquet dinner commemorating 28 days of friends, fun, and memories that will last a lifetime.

It won’t be long before your angels are returned to you safe and sound. See ya real soon!

Saludos,

Welcome back our loyal readers!

This week was packed with many fun adventures here in Barcelona and surrounding areas.
Let me first turn things over to our very own program member Jake to describe in his own words our daily afternoon life here in Spain. He wrote this essay as a part of an assignment in his Spanish class.

What in the world does that say you ask? Well
..
“When Spanish classes end at 1pm, we separate into groups of three or more to have lunch with our friends around Plaza Catalunya. Some restaurants that we eat are are called Ginos, Fabian, Kilimanjaro, Terra Blava, Pans + Company, Maoz, and Tapas Restaurant. After lunch, the people that want to go exploring almost always walk down Las Ramblas to find fashionable clothes in stores like Zara, Mango, Springfield, H&M, and Fun & Basics. At 3pm we have to come to the school to meet up with the groups for our different elective classes. The classes include photography, community service, fitness, SAT preparation and Spanish culture. When these classes end, we can do what we have organized free time options for three hours before dinner which starts at 8:30. After a long day, many people want to relax in the residence with their friends. Other people like to go to the gym to take classes like spinning, body pump and pilates. The people that stay in Plaza Catalunya for their second classes can return to the residence or stay in Plaza Catalunya to explore or to walk through the pretty streets.

As you can see, your students are learning to use and practice their Spanish write and speaking skills as it applies to everyday life.
This week we were lucky enough to go to two great museums, the Picasso museum right here in Barcelona and the Dali museum in Figueres, near the French border. While both museums were amazing, the Figueres museum offered the trip members more freedom to wander and enjoy the art at their own leisure, with indoor and outdoor exhibits to admire. After the Dali museum we traveled by bus to the small medieval town of Girona. We were able to walk around and photograph the ancient cathedral and the historic town full of little shops and of course, gelato stands.
On Saturday, we’re up and on the road towards Montserrat, a monastery in the mountains. Montserrat is a beautiful Benedictine monk retreat, still in use today. This place was not only enormous with many places to walk around inside and out of the monastery, but it was high up in the mountains with great views at every turn. Many of the students, such as Hailey and Ellery were able to capture some spectacular photos from up on the mountain and inside the church itself. The students in the photography class have been able to put their new skills to use with their cameras. Montserrat is by far the most scenic place we have seen so far in Barcelona.
After the monastery, we traveled to Olympic Park, the home of the 1992 Olympic games that were held right here in Barcelona. The trip members were able to walk into the actual Olympic stadium, walk around in Olympic park as well as the botanical garden where Ben and Kathleen took full advantage of the nice day to get outside. It was a nice piece of history to add to our list of things we have seen on our program.
As you probably know, the program members were given the option to go see a real live Bullfight here in Barcelona. Nora, Jesse, Badr, Emilie, Jaela, Paige, Bram, David, Ricky, Masoma, Ahmad, Andrew and Victoria and just a few of the students who chose to go witness this very Spanish cultural event.
Our last evening as a full group before the 3 week group members had to say their goodbyes we had a great night with some long awaited karaoke! Emily, Alexis Ch, Nikki, Becca, Mollie, Brittany and Mallory all gave wonderful performances.
All in all, it was another great weekend of fun in the Spanish sun. We were sad to see the 3 week  members head on back home to America, but not to worry; there is still plenty in store for the 17 Four week members!

Until next time,

ADIOS!

ÂĄHOLA!

So much has happened since our last update! As I’m sure you all know, we spent a lovely and busy weekend in Madrid. While there, we did a lot of touring around the city exploring the local streets and discovering a multitude of parks and statues; it was amazing! One of the highlights of this trip was when we walked to the Royal Palace and had time to wander around and take pictures, not only of the amazing architecture of the building, but also of the local street entertainment we have encountered often here in Spain. The man with no face was very amusing to Mallory and Abby. The mood was nicely set by the small orchestra playing a charity concert directly in front of the palace. The Palace also had a beautiful courtyard in which we took many pictures; Ben, Ellery, Rebecca and Emile were seen walking around snapping many shots or sitting for the photos. Megan and Alexis Ca. were caught in the act of taking silly photos of themselves; there were some good ones that should be saved and then displayed at their high school graduation parties.

That same night, we took a nice stroll to the Opera house for dinner and some entertainment. Little did we know that we would end up putting on our very own show! You again should all be very proud of the group members.  It all started when after dinner when Mallory was asked to play us a few songs on the piano in our room at the Opera house – she was wonderful! Next thing we knew, Mollie had joined in to sing some Adele for us! Then an acapella duet by Jake and Mollie (“Baby It’s Cold Outside”) left the audience begging for more.  We then all joined in singing “Seasons of Love” from RENT and Lady Gaga’s “Pokerface”. There was also a special cultural performance by Badr, Mohammed, David, Bram and Ahmad who showed off some singing, clapping and dancing that is popular in the Middle East. We even had a mini rap session performed by Jake, Masoma, Ally, and Sarah, as well as a duo rap performance by Masoma and Morgan.  It literally gave us chills to hear our group members coming together for an impromptu talent show.

Also showcasing her voice was Alexis Ch. Everyone was stunned by her performance and she received a lot of admiration from her peers and the staff. There were a lot of hugs, praise and high fives given that night. Even though we put on a great show ourselves, we were all impressed by the opera singers that performed two songs in our private room. The group members really enjoy the show and even were asked to sing along. Everyone was still singing during our whole walk home from dinner.  Victoria and Paige in the Spanish moonlight enjoyed the street singing. The 360° Student Travel staff feel so very fortunate to have been able to witness such an incredibly special night.

The next morning we got up and were able to go to the Prado Museum. The Prado Museum is renowned as being the largest art gallery in the world. Steven toured around with staff leader Andrew, our walking encyclopedia of Spain, to get a better feel of the paintings and their history. It also exhibits sculptures, drawings and other works of arts, but it is undoubtedly its large collection of paintings which has given it fame worldwide. It houses more than 8,600 paintings. They have more paintings than they have room to display them. This museum visit was a great way to show the group members some European culture with artists like, El Greco, Rafael, Goya, Rembrandt, and many more.

After this visit, many of our students are looking forward to the Picasso museum tour to see more works of art that they are familiar with. Another highlight of our Madrid trip was our adventure to Xanadu where we were able to choose between going skiing, snow boarding, or tubing. The largest group was made up of the tubers with members including Amanda, Jaela, Nora, Graham,  Becca and Nikki. Some of the snow boarders included Nick and Camille, while the skiers were made up of Jesse, Ben, Ricky, Haley, Emily F., Hannah, Mollie, and Andrew.  It was nice to get out of the heat and on to the powder for a while. Many students commented on our walk back outside how it was strange to have just been chilly, all bundled up with rosy cheeks on the slopes, to going outside back into the warm sunshine of Madrid.

We had a dinner in Madrid where some students were at “Spanish only” tables. We are working really hard to help the group members not only learn, but to use their new Spanish skills. This dinner was a success!  Even for those students who are in the beginner level Spanish, having them try to use their Spanish is helping them learn. Plus the other students who are more advanced are great at helping out the beginners. We have become quite the family. Our last day in Madrid, we walked to a lovely park called Retiro with a large pond in which we had fun in row boats beneath the brilliant sunshine.  The group had an incredible weekend in Madrid! The hotel was beautiful and centrally located, the food was great and the sights were amazing. We have plenty more fun activities in store, so stay tuned for our next scribe entry.

 ¥Hasta Luego!

Hola from Barcelona!

Can you believe it has been a week since you dropped off your teenagers and
sent them on the summer of their lives?

We have all been quite busy; I hardly know where to start our tale!

First off, let me take a moment to introduce myself since I will be your
Trip Scribe here in Barcelona, Spain! My name is Ryan and I am one of the
360° program leaders.

Let us begin with our very first metro ride here in Barcelona. We took the
metro as a group and travelled to Parc Guell. The part that has impressed us
as the staff is the initiative we have seen them take in wanting to learn
the rail system, the different trains we use and to which stop. They are
getting really good at it! While we travel on the public systems we have
formed groups which we call our, “Travel Groups.” The day the groups were
assigned, one of our trip members, Masoma, declared the group that I lead
was to be called, “Squad”. Sounds silly, I know, but the group LOVES it! The
Squad is made of Masoma, Nikki, Alexis Ch., David, Bram, Alexis Ca, Ricky
and Mollie. We have a good time in our group, and we are currently leading
in points from our daily morning preguntas (Questions).  GO SQUAD!  =)

Let us go back to Parc Guell! It was a beautiful Barcelona day and the
students were able to snap many pictures of the amazing architecture
designed by Antoni Gaudi as well as enjoy their first full day in Barcelona!
The park is located at the top of the hill with a nice view of the
Mediterranean Sea.  Program members Ricky, Nick and 360° staff member Andrew
were showing off their ‘futbol’ skills in the plaza area of the park when
some of the local children started cheering them on and soon joined in the
game themselves. Also that night we went to a restaurant and had our first
Spanish Tapas! Tapas, for those of you who are not familiar with the term,
are a snack or appetizer. Don’t let the word snack fool you; there was so
much food in such variety that we couldn’t finish it all.  The variety was
great and it was a good introduction to the Spanish food we have since
enjoyed.

This brings us to our next adventure to the DIR gym is just  fabulous. There
is a large cardio area, great free weights section, large group classrooms
and of course, the pool. Kathleen, Jake and Alexis Ch. have been frequent
patrons of the DIR gym.

Make sure you check out our pictures that are posted
on the SmugMug website from our pool time over the past week!  The huge hot
tub seems to be the favorite hangout so far for Jaela, Sarah and Ally. Jonah
and Andrew had a lot of fun having their pictures taken with an underwater
camera.

Another highlight of the program so far for the students was definitely our
trip the Barceloneta, the beach on the Mediterranean Sea. The program
members formed their own small groups and headed off for lunch at the beach.
We have all really bonded in the short time we have been here. There have
already been some friendships made that I’m sure will last a lifetime. Not
only did we try to catch a tan, but some also went swimming in the sea and
played some beach volleyball .  Of course, we cannot forget that our beach
day was EXTRA special because it was Amanda’s 16th Birthday.  After getting
home from the beach, the program members went to get spiffed up for Amanda’s
birthday dinner at a posh restaurant near our residence where we had some
great food and birthday cake.

Starting on Monday was our first week of Spanish class and afternoon
electives. We have a few different levels of Spanish speakers on the program
and have grouped them accordingly.  The professors use only Spanish to
communicate with the students.  They are truly being immersed in the Spanish
language and they have really been enjoying it. It has been nice to see the
change the students have made into speaking more Spanish with each other and
the staff now that school has started.

As for the electives, the fitness
class has started off well.  Badr, Ahmad and Mohammed learned a bit about
the F.I.T.T. Principle and a bunch of different exercises to target each
muscle group. Community service has also been a hit.  Steven came back from
the first day with a huge smile on his face when asked about his time spent
with the local children. The photography students have been eager to show
off their photos they have taken; Ellery in particular has been snapping
pictures left and right.

I know that was a lot of information all packed into one scribe.  Be on the
lookout for pictures and the next scribe post from our weekend trip to
Madrid.

Until then, Hasta Luego!
