For the first time in six years, the Dancing Fountains of the Bellagio, Las Vegas’ number one free attraction, will have some new moves when our western Active Teen Tours visit them this summer.

Some of the new songs include the Beatle’s Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean and Glenn Miller’s In the Mood.

The fountains are located in an 8.5 acre body of water, illuminated by just over 5,000 white lights (color lights were nixed during the initial installation). There are 798 minishooters, 208 swaying oarsmen who have a full range of spherical motion, 192 super shooters that blast water up to 240’ into the air and 16 extreme shooters that blast water up to 460’ into the air. A fog system can create an ambiance in the lake.

The whole production is managed daily by a team of 30 including divers who fish out coins and wedding rings frequently. All monies collected are donated to Habitat for Humanity. Once, someone threw in a catfish that was a pain to catch. Boats are also available to rescue anyone who decides to go for a swim.

The show takes place every 30 minutes in the afternoons and evenings, and every 15 minutes from 8 pm to midnight. Before the production, the nozzles break the water surface and the lights illuminating the Bellagio towers turn to a purple hue or red, white and blue.

Don’t miss this spectacle on our California Sprint, California & The Canyons, Californian Extravaganza, U.S. Explorer, American Voyageur, Adventurer, California Dreaming, Ultimate California and Hawaiian Spirit programs.

The Market Theater Gum Wall is a landmark in downtown Seattle. The wall is located in Post Alley underneath Pike Place Market. It is 15 feet high, 50 feet wide and is covered in multi-colored gum (many pieces in creative designs). Named the 2nd “germiest” tourist attractions by CNN in 2009 (after the Blarney Stone), it is a must see on our Active Teen Tours that visit Seattle!

The sticking began in 1993 when people waiting to get into the theater would stick their gum to the wall – many attaching coins to their gum. The theater scraped the gum twice … then gave up. In 1999, the wall was declared an official tourist attraction (check out the wall’s Facebook page here). The Gum Wall was featured in Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston and believe it or not is a very popular site for wedding photographers.

There are no “rules” for sticking, so leave your mark on the wall on our Adventurer, American Voyageur or Northwestern Odyssey this summer. If you’re feeling creative, make a design too. If the movement grows, this could become the #1 attraction in Seattle by next summer.

Alpine Coaster in Utah, Olympic Park in Calgary, skiing in British Columbia, moose and elk in Yellowstone, Disneyland in California, Carnival Paradise cruise to Mexico, Pink Jeep tour in Arizona … Pen exchange in Jackson Hole, Make Me Laugh in Calgary, flash mob in Whistler, tie dye shirts in Tahoe, Grant as a famous celebrity at Universal, Color War in Bryce … This is the end of forty days … The best summer of our lives!

As we reflect on the time that we have spent together, it is amazing to see “how far we’ve come.” We have become so much more then friends; family is a more apt term to describe the bonds that have been forged. We are all interconnected by what we have experienced and shared together.

We have learned over these past 6 weeks that we are all unique, and have all contributed something to make this trip the amazing experience it was …

Each one of us has a unique personality making us who we are and making us an invaluable part of our AmVoy #2 community.

It is with a heavy heart and tear-filled eyes that we say goodbye. Our memories are forever embedded in our hearts.

It is more fitting though, to not say goodbye, but to say “see you next time”, because even though we may never be completely together again on the bus, we relive our adventures in our minds and in our hearts.

Instead of sadness and sulking, it is imperative that we think of all we have accomplished and seen in the last forty days. We have all changed for the better and for that we owe all  of you a thank you!

It has been an incredible summer, an unforgettable experience. Thank you all for the memories, laughs, and truly the best summer of our lives!

40 days later “look how far we’ve come.” We’ve found we are “better together” and it truly is a “happy ending.”

Greetings AmVoy #2 Parents,

The Las Vegas part of our trip is now finished, but we still have so much to do! Why was this day different from all other days? To start it all off, the staff danced to the morning with their faces totally painted (Jared’s was red, Jonny’s was blue, Jess’s was green and Jodie’s was yellow – Jodie’s skin is so fair that the yellow was hardly visible!) Although this could have been the staff just acting like their crazy selves, it was not. This was a precursor to something epic– AmVoy #2 Olympics! On the bus, the staff began to argue over whether the evening mix or morning mix was better and thus, in case it has not been deduced yet, the two teams competing for the top title were morning and evening! This unique competition would consist of a series of … well … unique events. Team Evening had Sam D. and Noah as their fearless leaders and team Morning had Sam R. and Emily K. As the first activity, we had a massive game of trip trivia, constructing 100 facts about the trip into tough questions. Emily B. and Sam H. were contestants for the evening team and Matt L. and Jacob were contestants for the morning team (how did they know all the random answers, teenage minds are like sponges as the expression goes). We stopped for an amazing lunch in Zion National Park where most of us dined on Bison burgers.

Once on the bus again, we played a team versus team version of Pass the Streamer (remember that game that we made up on the bus ride to Calgary to celebrate the 4th of July?). Turns out even though it was so simple, it was one of the biggest hits of the trip. Lexi and Ethan passed that streamer like their lives depended on it. When that game finished, it was time for an incredible photo opportunity with the red rocks of Bryce Canyon behind us. The different shades of red and orange made it a spectacular sight. For dinner, we stopped in Kanab, Utah at the Chuckwagon Cookout. In Utah’s Little Hollywood we toured a movie set and even all put on costumes pretending to be pioneers, soldiers, and Indians, acting in a make-believe silent film. Jeff in the soldier costume and Ariel in the feathered Indian hat were so funny. The common sentiment was that they should seriously consider wearing the fashionable apparel during the year. A dinner of fresh biscuits, beef, salad, turkey and ice cream awaited us upon our return from the fifteen minutes of fame we all had just enjoyed. We arrived at the campground in Bryce and had a snack of cookies and fondue.

Day 36… Woe, were we in for a crazy, fun day of activities and friendly campsite competition! In the morning, we traveled to Bryce Canyon for a rewarding hike down to the Queen’s Garden. Jason, Erika and Emily B. had fun using the staff’s walkie-Talkies, giving themselves apt nicknames (Emily B. code-named herself Red Bull… to say Emily can get hyper is an understatement).

Back at the campsite, the trip members participated in a crazy Apache Relay Race. The Apache had many stations that had to be completed in a specific order, one team against the other. For Team Evening, Jeff, Jeremy and Jason had to construct and deconstruct a tent while going up against Matt L., Danielle and Ethan of team Morning. Lexi and Gabi competed in an interesting event involving juice whereas Ronni, Courtney, Erika and Sarah competed in an event involving pudding. Aja and Emily B. had to fish candy out of a bowl of whipped cream with their mouths and Jacob, Sarah, Sam D. and David ate a whole watermelon with no hands! If someone would have asked us what we would be doing in the afternoon, I don’t think anyone would have envisioned that (only on AmVoy #2). There were also flag and dance presentations towards the end of the evening. Lexi, Jeff, Emily B. and Allie made a beautiful flag for Team Evening, incorporating elements and funny moments from our trip into it (Emily B. can really draw, our mouths fell when we saw what she could come up with), and Jaime, Joli, Gabi and Danielle presented the flag for Team Morning, demonstrating an equal amount of flare for the arts (we knew that we had a musical group, but who knew they could draw as well?!). The dance was also amazing, given that they had a day to prepare it! Steven, Ronni and Eden were huge stars for team evening and Erika, Aja and Rachael came up huge for Team Morning. Andrew was absolutely crazy, cheering on his team and following from activity to activity while Matt M. worked behind the scenes to help make sure that everything was set up just right so that event could run smoothly.

The trip members then put on skits that best exemplified a day on our journey. Jordan showed off pretended to be Amanda while David and Grant played the parts of Jared and Jonny superbly. Grant could easily be mistaken for Jonny in his hat and David for Jared in his bandana and tie dye tee. The last event of the night was a song. The trip members were tasked with creating songs that summarized the summer. The songs were heartfelt and brought a lot of us to tears. They were filled with memories that we had forgotten and reminded all of us of “how far we’ve come.” The songs were so tear-jerking that the staff could not bring themselves to pick a winner, so we burned the scoreboards in the fire and called it a night with warm fondue. After 25 minutes of hugs and laughter, we called it a night!

Off to the Grand Canyon and our final stop in Scottsdale.

Greetings AmVoy #2 Parents,

So, what can be said about day 33?! A lot, a lot, a lot! Not only was it the ending of 15 days in California but it was also the day we headed to Las Vegas! We were on the road right after breakfast and for some of us, driving through a desert was a novelty. Where we stopped for lunch was next to a California landmark … the Alien Jerky Factory. Along with the dizzying array of beef jerky that was on display (enough to give the healthiest man on the planet a heart attack), there were all sorts of different hot sauces available. The hot sauce garnered an extremely large amount of attention, especially from Noah, Jordan, Jeremy and Andrew as it was advertised to be the 2nd hottest in the world!  Jeremy and Jordan pleaded with the store clerk to sell them a bottle, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you view the situation), the clerk refused to sell it to anyone under 18!

Once in Las Vegas, with Viva Las Vegas blaring in the background, we stopped for a cliche group photo underneath the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign (nothing screams tourist quite like it). Later on, dinner was at a family style Italian restaurant called Buca Di Beppo, where the creamy linguini and tasty chicken parmesean was served just like mama used to make. With our bellies full, we headed straight to the Stratosphere, which reminded us of the Seattle Space Needle. In the elevator on the way up, Matt L. astutely observed that the Stratosphere does not actually launch you into the stratosphere rather it brings you into the sky. When we finally made it to the observation deck at the top, there were 3 different rides to choose from, the Big Shot, Insanity or X-Scream. Insanity was by far the most popular (we are a very dare-devilish group). Insanity is a ride that spins you 900 feet over the edge of the Stratosphere! Emily B. covered her face in fear (and excitement!) when she experienced the ride for the first time and to say that her hair was out of place afterwards would be quite the understatement! Walking off of the ride, Jeremy and Sam R. exclaimed ironically, “Insanity was freakin’ insane”! None of us are very sure how Jeff got off shrugging, saying that it was “no big deal”. Once back on the bus, Steven tried to sing the song Stand-By Me with Jodie, Jess and Amanda (the key word is tried). After the Stratosphere, we explored Venice … or the Venetian, watched the Sirens of Treasure Island defeat the attacking pirate ship and saw quite the mirage … an erupting volcano at the Mirage! After a very interesting day, we made it back to the beautiful Monte Carlo and prepared for another day in Vegas!

Day 34 started with a sleep-in to ensure we were ready to embrace all that Vegas has to offer. Our day started in Caesar’s Palace, where Jeremy and Jason had planned to ask the hotel clerk if Caesar had actually ever resided there, but they didn’t have enough time (for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie The Hangover, that joke just went right over your head). At the forum shops, not only did Andrew have “the best milkshake ever,” but joined Jeremy, Noah, David and Grant in finally getting to try one of the spiciest hot sauces in the world (apparently Andrew only had a drop and needed more than one soda to quench his thirst!). After exploring Caesar’s Palace, we walked around Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile as well as the newest property on the strip, City Center. That afternoon we all went back to the Monte Carlo, to enjoy a beautiful afternoon by the pool. Matt M., Jordan and Ariel put the “lazy” in “lazy river”, floating downstream, allowing the flow of the water to gently push them along, while Jeff and Jason engaged Jared in a full on splash war (Jared lost, like always). Gabi and Erika took tubes and rode them down the river and enjoyed the relaxation!

After a wet n’ wild afternoon, we ate dinner at New York, NY! A roller coaster inside a hotel and a whole city recreated in a confined space?! No way! Real New York delicacies such as hot dogs and pizza were scarfed down while the New York signs and steam blowing out of manhole covers really made it feel like you were walking the streets of “the city that never sleeps!” Halfway through our meals, we were surprised by a star sighting – a contestant who made it into the top five of America’s Got Talent! She put on a show for our trip and Joli, Aja, Lexi and Allie swarmed her with so many questions (and they don’t even watch the show)! We then walked to Gameworks (a giant arcade), Coca-Cola World, and M&M World. Rachael and Danielle took some amazing pictures with the giant Coca-Cola polar bear (we had fun guessing if it was a real person inside the suit and if that was the case, how he survives in the extreme Nevada heat).

At Gameworks, Sam D., Jamie and Jared went head to head, playing the game Dance, Dance Revolution (we are not sure who really won in the end). To round out the night, we went to the Bellagio hotel to see the dancing fountains, with the water shooting up into the night sky in a mesmerizing fashion. We were lucky enough to catch two shows – the favorite being the one timed to All That Jazz. We also saw the hand blown glass ceiling in the lobby, the gardens and the world’s largest chocolate fountain.

After a full day, we headed back to the hotel for the night, satisfied with our time spent in Las Vegas. Get ready Bryce here we come!

Boy do we have something BIG planned …
